2.05 Nottingham – ZARA’S RETURN (1pt win – 7/1 Bet365, 13/2 generally)

ZARA’S RETURN is untested on soft ground, but she offered plenty of promise before she scoped dirty on her final start of the season last term and may be worth chancing in this wide-open contest. She chased home the useful 106-rated Polly Patt at this venue on her penultimate start and had bumped into some useful performers in Lion Of War (89) at Leicester as well Naval Power (110), Alzahir (100), One Nation (100) and Shabaz (88) at Yarmouth. It’s tough knowing what to expect on seasonal return, but the standard at the head of the market is not set any higher than what she achieved last term, and a repeat of her final start will be good enough. She is open to further improvement, and this is probably her easiest assignment to date on turf.

2.15 Wincanton – GREAT OCEAN (1pt win – 10/1 Bet365, 9/1 generally)

GREAT OCEAN is well handicapped on his best exploits off of this rating of 106, and he shaped as though he was ready to bounce back to form 19 days ago at Doncaster in a first-time cheek-piece and tongue-tie combination, but he stumbled on the flat and unseated his rider. That may be worth forgiving now returned to Wincanton, where he bolted up in January last year in excellent fashion in a race similar to this. He is still relatively lightly raced over hurdles after just six outings, and he could be ready to bounce back.

3.15 Nottingham – SOLUTRE (1pt E/W – 12/1 generally)

SOLUTRE made a promising debut at Haydock last season behind the useful pair One World and Courageous Knight when beaten just 1/2 a length despite being slowly away. That proved his effectiveness on soft ground, and today’s step up in distance will surely bring about further improvement. He starts the season off on a very fair rating of 82, and the three pounds claims of the excellent Harry Davies will only help matters. His form during the early part of the season last term stands up well in the context of this race, and he did beat favourite Serious Look at Newcastle in July. He looks like a good bit of value at the morning odds, dropped in grade and back on turf.

4.35 Wincanton – NO NO TONIC (1pt win – 11/1 generally)

NO NO TONIC is continuously underestimated when it comes to Wincanton, and that’s the case again today. Her form figures here read 1112526, and her most recent victories have recorded career-best time figures. Her latest was only a fraction slower than the bumper and quicker than the 127-rated Endless Escape – a twice subsequent winner and seventh in the Mares Novice Hurdle. She pulled up at Fakenham, but her career shows that she can bounce back at this venue. Lady Adare visually looks the part, but she is yet to achieve that on the clock or via RPRs and having bombed out at Taunton, she now has questions to answer. Puffin Bay is feared, but she has been well beaten in her last two starts and returns off a 257-day break, while Somespring Special turns out after scoring yesterday and may not be in the same vein.

5.05 Wincanton – TRIPLE TRADE (2pt win – 3/1 generally)

This can go to TRIPLE TRADE, who has been knocking on the door and wasn’t done with at Kempton when unseating his rider on landing in a good Class 3 Novice contest. This is much calmer waters today, and having matched his hurdles form on his latest outing, and a seven pounds lower mark, which allows him to get into a 0-120 chase in open company should see him to good effect. He bumped into two next-time-out winners on two occasions in February, and it’s surely only a matter of time before he gets off the mark in this sphere.
