2.45 Lingfield – Tack (1pt win – 4/1 bet365, Betfair & Paddy Power)

TACK is one to take more seriously now stepping into handicaps, and he is entitled to improve for his eye-catching return at Newcastle in a race that has worked out well. He stuck to the task under a hand and heel ride, but the performance suggested he would improve a good deal. He is drawn well here, and on the balance of his form, he shouldn’t find this handicap mark beyond him.

8.40 Sandown – Sovereign Duke (1pt win – 10/1 Betfair & Paddy Power, 9/1 Sky Bet & 888sport)

This is not a deep contest, and preference is for SOVEREIGN DUKE, whose seasonal return at Salisbury wasn’t as poor as the bare form suggests when held up off the pace and having to make a move earlier than ideal. That was a slowly run contest, and he was poorly positioned, so he is best not judged on that effort. He was well beaten at Kempton and Salisbury at the back end of last term, but today’s contest is far easier than those two, and he had little chance in a hot Class 2 at Doncaster on his start prior.

He has run two of his best races at this venue – last Aug when a narrow second to the useful Oceanline when carrying near top weight and a good fifth in the Bet365 Classic Trial as a three-year-old. Interestingly his second at this venue came after 53 days off after being beaten at Kempton on seasonal return, and he has had the same break today. Improvement should be expected, and he is fancied to come out on top for Henry Candy over Happy, who is short enough in the market.
