BARBILL (1.45, 1pt each-way 14/1)

This is a competitive race and not much separates the two at the top of the market but they offer little value at the prices. I am willing to side with BARBILL who has been gelded since he was last seen and has dropped to a mark of 92.

He was trainer Mick Channon’s top-rated two year old back in 2018, gaining a rating as high as 104 and looks well treated on the balance of his efforts last term. Working in reverse order, he can be forgiven his final start at Ascot when he didn’t take to first time cheekpieces and was denied a clear run in ground that would have been soft enough for him.

He disappointed in the Ayr Gold Cup when never travelling a yard and his previous run to that came in the Shergar Cup (less said about that meeting the better) under an inexperienced rider. For those three runs he has been dropped 6lb, but prior to those he was value for much more when finishing fifth beaten 3 lengths in a Group 3 when short of room and then dragged left in the closing stages.

He ran extremely well off a mark of 98 the run before at Newmaket in July last year and the winner is now 9lb higher, the second 21lb higher and the third 1lb higher and the selection runs here off 6lb lower. Oisin Murphy has been booked for his return so confidence can be taken that the trainer has him straight for this with the two having a record standing at 7/38 +£10.50 to a £1 level stake.

RETURNOFTHEMAC (2.45 Haydock, 1pt win 3/1)

RETURNOFTHEMAC looks the most progressive horse in this field and given he runs here under a penalty (due to go up 3lb) he looks well handicapped to gain a quickfire double for David O’Meara. He chased home Brunch two starts back and was value for more given how keen he was in the early stages and duly confirmed that form with the runner-up next time in impressive fashion. He will prove tough to beat on the front end.

SPOOF (6.10 Bath, 1pt win 10/3)

SPOOF was a victim of his own temperament on return at Kempton when extremely keen for three furlongs of the five-furlong race but caught the eye from an unpromising position. It has been a while between drinks for the Charles Hills’ runner but he was competing off marks in the 90s last term – as high as 96 this time last year – and given he is 0-5 on the all weather that was an encouraging sign.

Dropped markedly down the weights to a mark of 82 (13lb below his last win) and a switch back to turf are all positives. The trainer holds a 20% strike rate at Bath with 69/129 runners finishing in the first three.

WASEEM FARIS (6.10 Bath, 0.5pts each-way 40/1)

WASEEM FARIS has been wildly overpriced in the market here and anything shorter than 16/1 is worth leaving alone but despite his grand old age of 11 his record at at Bath reads: 31815.

Take away the run after a break and his record reads 3115 and the fifth was with first- time headgear. He is 0-17 on the all weather surface with those runs likely used to get him handicapped and he has fallen 9ls in the weights since his last turf run and is 8lb below his last winning mark which came here at Bath on his second start last term. He is worth chancing at the prices.

SWIFT APPROVAL (6.25 Leicester, 1pt win 4/1)

SWIFT APPROVAL takes the drop into Class 5 Company for only the second time in his career off the back of a promising return at Kempton earlier this month and has been dropped a further 2lb by the assessor.

His only other previous effort in this grade resulted in a cosy win at Newbury off a mark of 73. He now resides on a mark of 75 but has a talented claimer on board taking off 5lbs effectively putting him on a career-low mark of 70.

He ran a nice race here at Leicester in September last year finishing third in Class 3 Company off a mark of 82 so the track should be no issue. He is 13lb (inclusive of the riders claim) better off with Bounty Pursuit who was 2lengths behind the selection when they met at Newbury and given this is his first run on turf on good ground since being rated in the 80’s he is worth chancing to capitalise on this drop in grade.
