Combination Double - (2.40 Newbury and 1.15 Newbury)

This is something slightly different I wanted to try for this Saturday’s column in these two combined races at Newbury and its backing these horses simply on their age bracket. The 12.40 race is a Seniors’ Handicap Hurdle in which eight-year-olds (the youngest bracket) have an excellent record (won all 4 renewals) and the 1.15 is a Veterans Chase another race that has been dominated by those in the younger age bracket (10yo’s) who have won 8/9 renewals. The reason for this “experiment” is because if you backed all five qualifiers you would make a level stake profit at the current odds of 8/1, 33/1, 12/1, 12/1 and 20/1 providing one won.

Those horses are EQUAS MILLER, CHAMPAGNE CITY, HAUL AWAY, THE KINGS WRIT and COLORADO DOC you can play these all singly and even just the shortest price winner on the list will make you a profit (don’t take less than 6/1). The other option to put all of these into a combination double bet (which I will do also) which is simply a win double but with all of the horses in the same bet. The evidence for these age brackets is so overwhelming it’s worth a fun bet because many cant be solely relied on given their recent form and the first race (seniors) doesn’t come around too often to allow something like this.

Combination Double or play 5 singles (Not included in P/L)

SATURDAY SELECTIONS

Bareback Jack - (1.30 Kelso, 1pt win - 5/1)

BAREBACK JACK just might be the faster horse in this field and can use this tight left-handed track and quicker ground to his advantage. He has done nothing wrong in three starts under rules and this extra 2f will suit him well and its hard to see him out-speeded if he is there in the home straight. My Drogo, Any News and those at bigger prices would all appreciate a more galloping track and the selection doesn’t have much to find on the figures so gets the vote to continue winning ways.

Weatherfront - (2.05 Kelso, 0.5pts each-way - 14/1)

The track has to be a concern for favourite Flash Collonges who is a nice future prospect but WEATHERFRONT now gets the combination of good ground and this trip for the first time since being unfavoured by the slow pace at Cheltenham in a highly competitive handicap in which he caught the eye finishing strongly off a 2lb higher mark. Prior to that he chased home Champmanshype (146) at this venue only to be touched off by ¾ of a length and that form has worked out well. He can be forgiven his last two runs over hurdles on soft ground and is unexposed with this combination of ground and trip so may fly under the radar at an each way price.

Style De Garde - (2.30 Newbury, 0.5pts each-way - 11/1)

It’s a slight concern that SYLE DE GARDE has been off since his return from a long absence in September but it may be by design given his record fresh reads 31211 and given he shaped as though he retained all of his ability on return at Uttoxeter before tiring, he is worth chancing. He returns to the Newbury track which saw him make a winning hurdling debut for these connections and the former Fred Winter runner-up has dropped down the handicap to a mark of 132. This mark is well within reach on the evidence of his return run and better can be expected with that long 535 day absence now run out of him.

Ballywood - (2.55 Docaster, 1pt win - 5/1)

BALLYWOOD has dropped down the handicap after the assessor finally decided to relent and he now returns to a course he has run extremely well at on two previous attempts. He was impressive in the first of those when taking the scalp of Huntsman Son (146) and his only other attempt here saw him chase home Dynamite Dollars in a Grade 2. This race is by far the weakest contest he has encountered for some time and four of his last five runs have come from Cheltenham, a course which he doesn’t seem to like. His mark has dropped from 147 down to 139 and the quicker ground is in his favour so on the back of a spin in a Jumpers Bumper after wind surgery he has plenty in his favour to get back on the scoresheet.

Tommy's Oscar - (3.15 Kelso, 1.5pts each-way - 10/1)

I am quite keen on the chances of TOMMY’S OSCAR here on handicap debut and although he takes on some useful horses his performance at Musselburgh last time behind Bareback Jack suggests there is more to come. He was unsuited by the pace dictated by the leader on that occasion and was out-paced between the third and second last but stuck on strongly in the closing stages. He recorded an excellent time-figure at the same venue prior to that so the strong gallop in this big field handicap should help his chances rather than hinder them. His form has worked out well and his opening handicap mark of 133 looks lenient and he will surely be rated at least 140 by the end of the season on the evidence he has shown thus far. He has handled the quicker ground previously and has plenty of experience from the Point to Point scene so is battle hardened and there really are few negatives against his chances.
