2:05 – Bath – Magical Dragon 1pt win @ 11/2
MAGICAL DRAGON ran up to a useful level on debut over course and distance behind recent and subsequent Newmarket winner Establish (87) with the useful Defence Girl (81) in second. He was plenty green enough that day and looks the type to benefit from the experience. That level of form is not far off what is required here and with improvement almost a certainty he looks worth siding with a big enough price.
6.35 Ripon – Herbert Pocket 1pt win @5/1
This favourite is well worth taking on in this race and the big danger to HERBERT POCKET is Jananeh who has been disappointing for quite some time but could yet still come good off this very low handicap mark. There is a line through Aiden’s Reward that suggests the selection has the beating of today’s favourite Susie Javea and given he did so well from an impossible position last time to finish fourth he is worth chancing. The winner was extremely well handicapped and the second has come out and won next time out but Herbert Pocket has clearly been handicapped by connections over 6f last term and could have more to offer over this trip.
This is an intriguing contest so I am going to punt two horses and the first of those is CHINESE SPIRIT who was too keen for his own good off the back of a slow pace at Hamilton recently but wasn’t disgraced. He has fallen in the handicap to 2lb below his last winning mark and returns to a track he likes. Only last season he raced here seven times recording form figures of 3, 3, 3, 2, 7, 3 and 4. Those runs came off handicap marks of 60, 65, 65, 65, 65, 61 and 61 so today’s mark of 58 shouldn’t be beyond him. He was beaten 1 length in this race last term under today’s rider and although this looks a slightly stiffer task he is over-priced.
JOHN JASPER in contrast is completely unexposed after just the two starts but he looks one to relish this step up to 1m now going handicapping and he looks to have been handed a fair opening mark of 72. There is plenty of pace on in this race to suit and with very few looking well handicapped his weight for age allowance might prove to be the difference.
8.15 Ripon – East End Girl – 1pt e/w @10/1
There is plenty of pace on in this race so it’s unlikely that Choral Work will get things all her own way out in front and the two to focus on are the three-year-olds Party Planner and EAST END GIRL They both receive the three-year-old allowance and have both offered plenty to work on and given there is a late night gamble going on the former so the price has all but gone. However EAST END GIRL caught the eye on seasonal return at Kempton doing the best of those from off the pace in a steady run affair. She, in fact, was the only one to come out of the chasing pack to and that form has some serious substance to it with Maiden Castle (88) and the progressive Quickthorn (82) having the run of the race. She may have this race fall into her lap and rates a solid each way bet at the prices.
