12.35 Ripon – Zim Baby 1pt @ 5/1
ZIM BABY wasn’t given the ideal conditions to replicate the form of her emphatic victory at Thirsk when stepped up to 7f on soft ground at Haydock last time out. She did too much too soon after getting worked up in the stalls and faded inside the final furlong. She now drops back to the 6f trip that saw her improve and is worth giving another chance to now that the price is right. Her from figures over this 6f trip on turf read 1, 1 and 2. Ignoring her recent emphatic victory the form of her two runs over this trip make her look extremely well treated. Of her win at Leicester the second is rated 81, the third 65, the fourth 70 and the fifth 63. Her debut win second reads even stronger with the winner rated 106 (needs to be taken in context) the third is rated 77 and the fifth 77. She now has a rating of 82 but her new mark hasn’t kicked in yet and she runs off 75 under a 6lb penalty five of which jockey George Rooke negotiates and she is taken to put things right this time.
2.10 Ripon – Sameem – 1pt @ 4/1
This is trappy and SAMEEM is 10lbs worse off at the weights with recent course scorer Benadalid but he shaped like he had more to offer this season when making his return to action in a hot 0-95 contest. He won’t want for fitness now and he takes a small drop in grade and sits on a workable mark on the balance of his form last term. His two course and distance efforts here have bought out the best in him with a third place finish going down by ½ a length behind Global Heat and a then a comfortable victory off a handicap mark of 90. He is 4lbs higher here off 94 but he has unfinished business in handicaps after a progressive season last term including a strong Listed win at Hamilton. He disappointed over 1m6f on soft ground behind Technician in a Group 3 last season and the switch to the all weather saw no progress either but the gelding operation could see him improve further and he has the conditions to do so today.
5.40 Newbury – Jungle Speed – 0.5pts e/w @ 25/1
There isn’t much to separate most of these in this field so it might be worth taking a chance on JUNGLE SPEED who has been priced as the rank outsider but if he runs up to anything like he did at Newcastle when third back in February he ought to have a say in matters. He has had a mixed career but he has only had six starts over 6f and five of those came in France but it was a career best effort for the four-year-old at Newcastle. He came over from France in August last year to run in a hot Class 3 handicap over 5f and the official handicapper gave him a rating of 90 to run off. He lost a shoe but did look in need of 6f despite leading the filed but wasn’t disgraced finishing 9th of 16. After running at Newcastle in February connections ran him over 7f on his next start at Southwell where he folded tamely in a 0-105 Class 2 race and Ivan Furtado quickly moved him on. He makes his debut for David Loughnane today after a short break has been dropped 2lbs in the ratings to a mark of 81 and drops into a Class 4 0-82 and he could be the answer in a tricky puzzle.
6.10 Newbury – Hlaitan 1pt e/w @ 12/1
I hope this horse is not going to send me crazy because I am sure HLAITAN is much better than this mark of 76 given his exploits last term. He wasn’t seen to best effect at Goodwood behind Tulip Fields who had the run of the race and is a subsequent winner and now rated 96. The third also won next time out and is rated 82 but the pair had things all there own way on the front end off a very slow early gallop and kicked down the hill at Goodwood. The selection was held up and keen at the rear of the field and had no room coming into the home straight and the bird had flown. That might have been a blessing however as he comes in here under the radar and the hope is he can show his true ability.
8.10 Newbury – Make It Rain – 1pt e/w @ 10/1
There is rain due at Newbury tomorrow which may see this filly pulled from the race should it materialises but the price about MAKE IT RAIN is too hard to ignore. She has shown plenty of promise this season in two starts to date including when catching the eye at Yarmouth behind Celestran. That run was enough to think she is well handicapped off this mark and her previous Kempton form has worked out well when clearing away from the field in impressive fashion. I am still scratching my head about what went wrong in the closing stages at Redcar last time as she travelled there full of running and was eased off by Tom Eaves. The rain softened ground had been given as the excuse by the post race analysis team but I am not buying that just yet for all she did run well on heavy ground previously. She runs back against her own sex here and has the strongest form on offer in this field and now gets the services of James Doyle. Simon Crisford had previously had an excellent record here at Newbury and the new partnership are 1 for 2 with a +£4 profit to level stakes. With the dead 8 runners and 3 places on offer 10/1 looks rather big.
