Ladies Day at the Cheltenham Festival is one of the most exciting days of the year and we’ve picked out some big price Dark Horses for you to watch out for on Day 2 at Cheltenham…
Dark Horse: 1.30 CHeltenham - JARVEY’S PLATE
Jarvey’s Plate represents a local yard (Fergal O'Brien) who are sure to gain a Festival success soon. This athletic 6yo may have misfired on Trials Day behind Birchdale, but he was a hugely taking 18 length winner at Cheltenham before that and can be expected to bounce back here with a respectable run. Paddy Brennan gets on well with the horse and at 20/1, there is plenty of juice in his price for each way purposes.
Dark Horse: 2.10 Cheltenham - ON THE BLIND SIDE
For a relatively well fancied 10/1 shot, not many people at all are talking about On The Blind Side, but he does actually have a big chance here. His career has been somewhat plagued by niggling hold ups, but on his day he is an extremely talented horse and last time out at Kempton, he posted a really handsome speed figure when hammering the useful and well fancied Talkischeap. Not many people are talking about this horse...which makes him the Dark Horse in the field. Santini is the apparent first string, but On The Blind Side has always been held in lofty regard. Could this be his time to shine?
Dark Horse: 2.50 Cheltenham - HIGHEST SUN
This Colin Tizzard trained 5yo has enjoyed a low key, but noteworthy prep for this. In four starts this season, he has improved with every run and has posted two classy speed figures in his last two runs at Wincanton and Chepstow. He won well last time out and although he is unproven over this trip and track, he could be a real dark horse in the Coral Cup. A mark of 139 and racing weight of 10st 12lb makes him an interesting proposition for an open race.
Dark Horse: 3.30 Cheltenham - HELLS KITCHEN
Harry Fry’s imposing 8yo is well known to be a bit of a nutjob at times, but boy is he talented when he puts it all together. Last time out at Ascot, Hell’s Kitchen absolutely slammed Janika carrying top weight and that horse is a strong fancy for the Festival Plate on Thursday. He stays a bit further, is very good on the clock and you could consider him for an E/w play OR perhaps in the “Without Altior” markets. If he remains calm in the prelims and settles he’s in with every chance of hitting the places.
Dark Horse: CIEL DE NIEGE
Who knows what this Willie Mullins ex-French horse is capable of? He finished 8 lengths behind a really well touted horse called Pic D’Orhy, now trained by Paul Nicholls and that form could be key to Ciel De Niege’s UK handicap mark of 132. He’s never raced here, but Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh team up and at double figure odds, this juvenile is definitely the enigma in the field.
