Sam-Turners-Saturday-Form-File-v1BAGS GROOVE (Kempton, 1.50) looked a high-class novice chaser in the making until the wheels came off on Boxing Day at Kempton in Grade 1 company.

He had previously slammed Secret Investor by nine lengths at Wincanton (2m4f) before thumping Thomas Campbell by the same margin at Huntingdon over three miles. The selection had previously stamped both victories with a terrific round of jumping, finding a stride at his fences in almost metronomic fashion and he may feel more at a home in this small field on better ground.

Angels Breath looked an exciting novice at Ascot when dismissing some talented rivals and he is sure to take some beating here as he looks to win before heading to Chetenham for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. The only disappointing facet of his chance is his price so with that in mind SCARLET DRAGON (Kempton, 3.00) could be the value play against him.

Rated in excess of 100 on the level, the selection relished the return to hurdles at Huntingdon, beating two subsequent winners in smooth fashion and Daphne Du Clos (5th) so shouldn’t be underestimated. He clearly appreciates a sound surface and it is worth noting he made his hurdling bow at the Sunbury venue when a fine second.

SAMBURU SHUJAA (Chepstow, 3.40) is thriving at present and gains the nod after impressing at the Welsh venue last time. The handicapper only raised the progressive hurdler 4lb for his 17-length romp and I like the fact his trainer is keen to return to a track which clearly suits him well.

On Sunday, OLD GUARD (Fontwell, 2.50) should be some value to defend his crown in the Grade 2 feature.

Paul Nicholls’ winner of over £350,000 in prize money has been unable to add to his successes this season but has run well in defeat including against If The Cap Fits and, last time, at Cheltenham.

Old Guard was winning this last year following a near two-month break after running in the Relkeel Hurdle at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day and is taking the same route. He can add to the yard’s recent big weekend successes.

DOC CARVER (Carlisle, 4.45) produced plenty of extra energy on his first run back after a wind operation to repel a battling Air de Rock in an all-out scramble to the line. It was very, very close but the pair were a country mile ahead of the rest and the time was decent.

That was the winning point-to-pointer’s first victory under rules in a light career and he has been found a suitable opportunity to follow up.
