GG Tipster Kevin O'Malley returns to Tips Den duty after the Bank Holidays with a trio of selections on the turf at Wetherby this afternoon...
Is there enough Jumps racing this week or what? It is the middle of May and it does take a bit of sifting to find flat meetings today, but with Chester on the horizon and a decent betting card at Wetherby this afternoon, there is some escape from NH for those of us in need of a break from it. The 2.50pm Novice Stakes over 7f is the first race of interest and the Andrew Balding runner Be More has been well backed from around 3/1 into 7/4. The Shamardal filly has not been seen since September, where she ran to an RPR/Topspeed combo of 69/63 in finishing 4th behind Sunday star at Newmarket. She is clearly open to progress and it was a fair debut, but she’s plenty short enough at the prices. John Gosden’s Duneflower has a similar break from the track to overcome on seasonal return and has a bit to find on the clock for me, while Hugo Palmer’s newcomer, Assembled, is an unraced unknown quantity who will need to be plenty sharp on debut to take this.
So I think and hope Declan Carrol’s DEEBEE can prove a crafty E/w selection at 8/1 with several firms. The Dawn Approach colt produced two solid efforts at Ayr and Nottingham as a juvenile and returned to action at the latter named track 8 days ago with a fine effort in second behind a smart looking Roger Varian trained horse. Deebee produced an RPR of 75 there and a fair TS rating of 61, a level of ability which gives him every entitlement to be very competitive here. The step back to 7f is an interesting move too, as we know he’ll have plenty in reserve late in the day, so hopefully he can improve for that seasonal return, put his race fitness to good use and run a big race here under Kevin Stott.
In the 3.20pm, Mick Appleby’s CASE KEY returns to action after a winter break and the experienced 6yo has been on a steady drift from 6-7/1, to around 10/1-11/1 this morning and at double figure prices I can’t let the horse go unbacked. He ran up to or beyond his handicap mark of 72 on his last four starts of 2018 and comes out very well on the speed figures against the top of the market. Generally operational over 6f, this stiff 5 and a half should be just about perfect. He has a decent draw and few excuses not to go well first time out, given he has gone well fresh in the past.
Another I can’t let go unbacked is the Micky Hammond trained Jo’s Girl in the 3.55pm Class 5 Handicap, available at 25/1 with bet365 this morning. She never went a yard at Pontefract last time out and was not given a hard time of it. A first time tongue tie suggests her breathing may well have been off there and in any case, she is much better than that effort and indeed than her recent form figures suggest. She made a decent start to the season at Ponte before that and if she can run up to the best of her efforts there last season today, her mark of 68 is quite workable. A drop back to a mile will help her cause and I think Wetherby might just suit the horse.
