The Luck required to have a good, consistent year betting on horses hasn't showed its welcome self enough in 2018. But on we must kick, in the usual quiet confidence, hope & promise of better to come...
2.45 - Paco Escostar E/w 6/1
Seen The Lyte is in pretty irresistible form at present and the hat-trick will be hard to deny, but she is 6lb higher here, at a different track to the likes of Musselburgh & Catterick she’s won at recently. Her record on good to firm reads: 0-1-4, which is a concern for backers on today’s ground and at the prices, Paco Escostar looks the bet to be had. Paul Midgley couldn’t be in much better form at present and this filly must have a really good chance if building on the best of her juvenile efforts, which earned her an official rating of 71. She tried really hard when staying on at Catterick back in October and looked a bit unfurnished, so with a little physical improvement, assuming she's fit, she should serve it up to the market leader.
3.05 - Loulin E/w 9/1
This Exceed And Excel gelding had three starts for David O’Meara has a juvenile, the last two of which were ran on unsuitable ground for the horse. He shaped well for much of his good ground debut at Pontefract back in August though, finding no extra in the closing stages, but certainly looking the type to improve in time. The winner earned a rating of 87, while the second that day, Showmethedough, is rated 82 and has shaped well himself a couple of times this year. The 3rd & 7th in that Ponte race have also found the net since, so Loulin is interestingly handicapped on a mark of 62, now representing the Ruth Carr stable. He’s also had a wind op.
A very interesting Fillies’ handicap here over 7f, with a big field and although the race is not without risk from a punting point of view, one or two at bigger prices do catch the eye. The first of those is Mick Appleby’s Railport Dolly, who is handicapped to go well here off 69, if building on a solid effort when 4th of 10 at Nottingham last time out. The drop in trip may just suit in a strongly run race. Narodowa is a bit more of a shot in the dark as she has disappointed in two of her three career starts. However, there’s every chance she can develop into a winning handicapper as a 3yo on pedigree and the form of her Salisbury run - sandwiched between those two indifferent ones - makes her another interestingly handicapped horse on a lowly mark of 69 to start the campaign.
