Kevin O'Malley struck with Topofthegame on Ladies Day and his Banker of the entire meeting runs on Day 3 at Prestbury Park...
It has been a testing Cheltenham Festival on the punting front and unlike in other years, I am not keen to keep eating into the points with 3-4 picks in handicaps when things just aren’t clicking, so we’ll keep things fairly simple on Day 3. In the first, I think Capeland has a great chance if his jumping holds up. A horse that comes out well on the ratings I use, Paul Nicholls had handicap options but connections see fit to run the horse here. He has progressed nicely through his last three starts and lost little in defeat to a resurgent Eamon An Cnoic at Chepstow last time out, having not jumped as well as he can. Bottom line is, it is a bit of a shot in the dark in this company, but he’s available to back at 28/1 and I think he’s no more than a 16-18/1 poke in what is, essentially, a very open novices’ chase.
Frodon’s preparation for the Ryanair this year is different. He’s been trained for it, with no hard races around Ascot beforehand. Frodon is remarkably good over his fences around Cheltenham, Bryony Frost knows how to get the best out of him and he brings, for my money, the best overall form to the table here. His speed figures are tremendous, Paul Nicholls struck with Topofthegame on Ladies Day and I reckon Frodon can follow suit here with a massive run. Dangers are clear and present and there’s plenty of them. Un De Sceaux and Footpad give Mullins a strong hand, Monalee has a great chance if he puts it all together, while the likes of Aso, Terrefort and Charbel could outrun big odds.
Paisley Park is going to bolt up, he’s just too good for this lot. We are due some rain tonight, which makes him even more of a good looking thing at 2/1. The only threat to his chance is snails pace, but I think they will go an even gallop and Coleman will be cute to any tactical theatrics from his rivals. Banker of the meeting for me. If he was trained by Willie Mullins he’d be odds-on...he should be.
