...After striking with a tidy 5/1 winner last night at Newcastle, Kevin O'Malley returns with two selections at the Northern venue, along with six selections elsewhere on a fun-packed Saturday of flat racing action...
Henry Candy’s evergreen sprintster shaped very nicely on his return to action at York last time out and has perfect conditions today on a surface he loves, a track he thrives on, traversing a 7f distance over which he is a prolific winner. Limato is 5-3-12 on good to firm ground, 2-1-4 on the July course and boasts an impressive 4-1-6 record over the trip.
This 78 rated 3yo lost a shoe when scoring handsomely on soft ground over a mile at Doncaster last time up and is a fair price to follow up here on more suitable, faster ground over ten furlongs. Pam Sly’s charge is progressing at the right time and he got on well with Shane Kelly in the saddle on his latest start.
With the exception of the in-form Flight Risk, there’s isn’t a great deal of depth to this 1m contest. Jessica Harrington’s Pincheck arguably boasts the best form in the field and his absence from the track is negated agreeably by the fact he has gone very well fresh in the past. He has a record of 3-3-7 on Good or Good to Firm ground and should be primed to go well first time out.
Jassaar is a horse I like and he may well prove tough to beat here. But Basic Law has very similar speed figures of late, he stays a bit further which is always a good thing in my book, he gets 10lb in the handicap from Dermot Weld’s market leader and the 3yo Lawman gelding is available to back at well over double the odds.
I watched the Investec Derby again a couple of times this morning, expecting to find clues to a sporting punt in the Irish version today. The only real conclusion I came to is that none of the prominent finishers there, who re-oppose today and are priced as they ought to be just now - are particularly intimidating in the scheme of things. Rakan is a quirky sort and didn’t put it all in when Broome sped by him two starts back at Leopardstown. But he showed a more promising attitude in landing a three runner contest at the same track last time out, where he comfortably outgunned Barbados and Eminent Authority, who both ran crackers behind Dashing Willoughby at Royal Ascot. I think this horse has a good bit of improvement in him, certainly when provided with a more searching pace to track, something he is yet to encounter in any of his four career starts. I’d imagine Crowley will bury him away in the early part of the race and seek to pick off as many as he can late in the day. I wouldn’t bat an eyelid if Rakan won this, because it isn’t what I would consider to be a strong Group 1, more a collation of colts heading the market who just happen to be the best, so far, of an ordinary enough crop.
With both Invincible Army and Mr Lupton unproven on the tapeta surface, Laugh A Minute is worth chancing here in receipt of 5lb from his chief rivals today. Roger Varian’s 4yo has only won 2 of his 12 starts to date, but he is as consistent as they come on RPRs and Topspeed ratings and he looks to have every chance of being right in the mix under today’s conditions.
Anythingtoday will be a tough nut to crack back in trip here, but course winner Lawmaking has every chance of getting into the frame and looks a little over-priced at 15/2 under the guidance of Jason Watson. His mark of 82 is workable on the back of another sound effort at Haydock last time up, where he shaped as though this step back up to ten furlongs would suit.
This Tom Tate trained 5yo is perhaps my strongest fancy of the day. He’s been in tremendous form in 2019 and comes out a clear best on Topspeed ratings here. A 6lb rise for his course and distance romp last month shouldn’t be enough to stop him following up here provided he remains in the same vein of form after a six week break and with a clean run through I think he’ll win.
