Today in the GG Tips Den, our tipster Kevin O'Malley has three bets on the Town Moor for Day 3 of the William Hill St Leger meeting, along with a pair of bets at Sandown Park
1.50 - Ellthea E/w 8/1
3.00 - Island Brave, Theglasgowwarrior E/w 16/1, 25/1
4.05 - Athmad E/w 7/1, double stakes
3.25 - Tony Chestnut E/w 20/1
5.30 - Astrologist 9/2
A decent field of fillies has assembled for the 1.50pm Sceptre Stakes and although loathed to be backing against my old ally Dancing Star, I do feel Ellthea is the interesting one here. We are entering a stage of the year where she excelled last season, including a fluent success at this meeting. She had two starts earlier in the summer, where she didn’t run to her best but wasn’t disgraced either and her trainer Karl Burke reports the 3yo to be great order ahead of this return to Doncaster after a break. It’ll be interesting to see how she gets on, along with the lightly raced market leader Laugh Aloud, against rivals who’re battle hardened on the back of a busy campaign. Ellthea would probably prefer deeper ground, but she’ll be ready to rock and should run a big race under Clifford Lee.
In the 3.00pm Class 2 handicap over 1m6f, Island Brave is up 4lb for his recent Nottingham success over this trip and remains competitively handicapped off 96 on the back of that for Heather Main. It’s an open race and he looks a big price to follow up with another solid run. Theglasgowwarrior didn’t have the rub of the green at York two starts back and was noted to be staying on well when the race was over. He finished a good 3rd at Hamilton last time out and I think this step up in trip, back on a galloping track could see the 4yo outrun odds of 25/1. Tough ask in this grade, but Jim Goldie’s charge has a good attitude and won’t disgrace himself.
The Group 1 entered Sagarius is understandably the odds-on favourite here, but there was a lot to like about the way Brian Meehan’s Athmad won on debut last time out at Newbury. The 7f contest was ran at a modest pace, but the form of the race has worked out really well, with the 2nd and the 4th both winning since. Athmad did have the run of things last time and will need to prove he can handle a stronger pace here, but the son of Olympic Glory could be quite smart and at 6/1 he’s an ideal candidate for a decent E/w punt in the 4.05pm.
At Sandown Park, Tony Chestnut is overpriced for a Class 5 Novice Stakes at 3.25pm. Venedegar will be hard to beat and is going the right way, but Peter Chapple-Hyam’s outsider has shaped quite promisingly in two starts over 7f at Yarmouth and Brighton. This step up to a stiff mile should bring about some improvement from the son of Sepoy and if that turns out to be the case, he shouldn’t be out of the first 4 or 5 home in this field of 12. Hopefully he'll hit the frame.
The Clive Cox trained Astrologist when into my GG Alerts after finishing a neck 2nd at Nottingham last October. A strong son of Sea The Stars, he is a brother to Raheen House and bred to be a useful racehorse. He returned to action back in May and travelled notably well until weakening a furlong or so from home, leaving the impression he was in bad need of the run. The strapping 3yo has been gelded since we last saw him, I’m hopeful he will enjoy the demanding Sandown track and you can be sure that connections will be disappointed if a BHA rating of 78 represents the ceiling of his ability.
