POSTED (2.10 Doncaster)

The 2.10pm at Doncaster on Friday is a tough and competitive Group 3 contest over 7f, won last year by an old favourite of mine in Dancing Star. 3yos do have an excellent record in this race though and here, I’m going to take a chance on the Richard Hannon trained Posted at around the 12/1 mark.

This Kingman filly had been knocking at the door of a win until finally producing the goods at Salisbury at the end of July, where she produced a sustained and telling turn of foot to outgun the useful Strict Tempo. Last time out on the 24th of August, Posted once again displayed a distinct change of gear to readily bolt up at Newmarket from a mark of 85, recording an RPR of 93 and her best speed figure of the season to date.

I think this filly is improving at just the right time. She is a bit quirky, but that turn of foot she has is pretty lethal and if she can put it to use here against admittedly better opposition, I suspect she will go very well under Sean Levey.

BARSANTI (3.10 Doncaster)

The last time Stradivarius graced the Town Moor turf, he was beaten in the St Leger. His second visit in this year’s Doncaster Cup is far more likely to prove a successful one, but I am going to have a pop at him with 33/1 shot Barsanti, who ran a season best in the Ebor last time out and with a clearer run, would’ve gone close to winning.

The way I see it, we know that Dee Ex Bee cannot beat Stradivarius, so backing him to win at around 5/2 makes as much appeal as a kick to the chin. Max Dynamite is a 9yo, finished well behind Barsanti in the Ebor and for some reason is eleven points shorter in the betting, while the Emmet Mullins trained Sneaky Getaway surely lacks the experience to trouble the judge in this company. Cleonte isn’t good enough either so that leaves Barsanti, a hugely talented but so often frustrating 7yo, but one who comes here on the back of an excellent run.

Barsanti record a Racing Post Rating of 111 in finishing 5th to Mustajeer off a big weight in the Ebor, which leaves him 8lb to find with Stradivarius on the bare form of the Champion’s Yorkshire Cup win last time out. But we can readily upgrade Barsanti’s effort by at least a pound or two, given the wretched path through the race he had to endure late on. Perhaps most notable though is the Topspeed figure of 102 Barsanti recorded at York, which is the best rating of its kind this season on show here.

The Ebor was Barsanti’s first effort at beyond 1m4f and for my money, he stayed really strongly over the 1m6f trip. This step up to 2m2f is another dip into the unknown, but at odds of 33/1 I think he is worth a little go at. There is no question that Stradivarius is a great champion and a fabulous stayer with seemingly boundless will to win. But it is just a horse race and I think Barsanti is the value play, whether that is in match-bets with closer rivals, “without the fav” markets etc or just a bet in the regular market. I’ll just have a straight each-way bet in the hope he can build on that Ebor effort, stay this trip and perhaps give the jolly something to think about.

GOLDEN DRAGON (3.45 Doncaster)

With Royal Ascot winner A’Ali and the rather exciting Alligator Alley heading the market for this 5f Group 2, it could well prove a strong race. The one I am keen to back each-way though is the improving Golden Dragon, a Starspangledbanner colt who has won his last two starts.

His three Racing Post Ratings to date read: 60, 79, 85, which tells us he is progressing well with every run. For my money, he was all out to score over 6f last time out and I quite like this drop back to the minimum distance for the horse. He’ll need to improve a stone to bustle up the best of these, but you never know until you try and the Stuart Williams trained runner is a fair looking each-way selection at top odds of around 14/1. Oisin Murphy does the steering, which as we know is often a handy asset.
