Prior to that he had looked a horse to follow when taking a Doncaster handicap over two furlongs shorter on his seasonal and handicap bow. He couldn’t quite follow up in the London Gold Cup at Newbury but ran a fine race finishing just a length adrift of Headman who has since won a Saint-Cloud Group 2.
The selection’s tame effort at Ascot can be forgiven and, whilst he is likely to stay further as time goes on, today’s trip looks the optimum for the time being. Potentially a Group horse in the making, Good Birthday can put in a bold show and upset the Mark Johnston dominance (five wins in the last six years) in the contest.

She signed off on last season with a fine win at Listed level at Newmarket - staying on very strongly - and kicked off the new campaign winning unchallenged in a decent time across the Irish Sea.
Classy stablemate One Master finished behind Beshaayir at the Curragh and is likely to be a threat this afternoon following her excellent run in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot. However, she is yet to win over a mile and may find conditions a bit too quick, whilst the selection - proven at the trip on the going - looks to have come of age and can prevail in a tight contest.

BREATHTAKING LOOK (Newmarket, 4.45) is lightly-raced, improving with each outing and won over course and distance three weeks ago in a decent time considering the rain-softened turf. It was an imperious performance which can also be upgraded as she lost a shoe.
Conditions will be a lot quicker now but she ran a blinder on good to firm at York on her seasonal bow, won on debut on very fast going at Yarmouth and on the all-weather at Newcastle. She is versatile and fast.
