FORT DE L’OCEAN (2.00 Cartmel, 1pt win 5/2)

Dogon will no doubt be a popular choice here and he looks well ahead of the handicapper but this Cartmel course is a stern test of jumping with fences coming thick and fast and that may cause a few issues for the Paul Nicholls runner, so the vote goes to FORT DE L’OCEAN.

The selection arrives here with a penalty but he impressed over course and distance just twelve days ago and looks a reformed model from last season. With his jumping an asset, he can continue his improvement and record back-to-back wins at the expense of the favourite.

NO HIDDEN CHARGES (2.35 Cartmel, 1pt win 10/3)

NO HIDDEN CHARGES made a solid start to his chase career at Market Rasen when finishing second behind a serial course winner in Ballyhome and a repeat of that performance should suffice here.

He tired in the closing stages of that race and shaped as though he would come on for the run and he always gave the impression that he would improve for fences. He sits on a lofty enough mark of 131 here but this race shouldn’t take too much winning and Neil Mulholland has a good record here with 7 wins from 32 runners. It could be significant that this is his only runner on the card.

ARABIC CHARM (4.35 Sandown, 1pt each-way 6/1)

This is highly competitive but ARABIC CHARM could be let in extremely lightly by the handicapper off a mark of 77 now that the drop in trip to 7f is likely to see her in a better light.

She improved from her debut at Haydock on unsuitable soft ground to finish third in a good maiden at Windsor but was caught late in the day after doing too much too soon but showed plenty of early speed with a finishing kick that petered out. The second (who she was behind on debut also) won next time out off an opening handicap mark of 78 in a very good Class 4 race.

Of her debut run, the third was unlucky after a mishap coming out of the stalls but finished second next time out behind Glen Force (84) and the fifth won next time out and is rated 83. She is likely to have plenty more to come and offers excellent value here from stall 1 with the booking of Jim Crowley catching the eye with a 27% strike rate for the trainer.

ESCALADE (6.20 Wolverhampton, 1.5pts each-way 6/1)

We haven’t seen the best of ESCALADE yet and she can be forgiven her run at Ripon last time under a very inexperienced rider. She is best judged on her runner-up effort behind Kepala (82) at Newmarket and despite just the three runners there the clock suggests it was a truly run race.

That form was given a boost when the winner next time ran the rapidly improving Dubious Affair close at Newbury and that one is now rated 99 after running Withhold close in a Listed event.

The selection is lightly raced and has plenty of stamina in her family so there should be more to come. She has the beating of Choral Work from their recent meeting at Ripon and now gets the cheekpieces for the first time to help sharpen her up. A few of these look held on their handicap ratings and Dreaming Blue needs to prove he acts on the all weather but rates the clear and only danger.
