ZOFFEE (12.45 Newbury, 1pt each-way 13/2)

ZOFFEE, Anemoi and Editeur Du Gite are the three to focus on here for me and in that order.

This four-year-old has made a bright start to his chase career with a good second at Fontwell behind Getaway Trump and showed an aptitude for fences with some slick jumping. That race has a loose form line through Golden Taipan that links with Eritage ,who looked fortunate to win at Ludlow.

Although the form at Exeter took a knock next time, it was an improved display and he showed a willing attitude at the finish to hold off Dorking Boy (126) along with a smart turn of foot. His mark of 132 on the basis of those two runs looks more than fair and he receives a handy 7lb weight-for-age allowance.

He will be ridden prominently and his fluent jumping can gain him lengths at fences to exploit the weakness in a field where jumping has not been an asset. He looks a solid option and it is pleasantly surprising to see him so big in the market.

DR SANDERSON (1.25 Doncaster, 1pt win 11/4)

DR SANDERSON should have plenty more to offer after an emphatic seasonal return win. He showed signs of talent last term but failed to fulfill his potential and, although he didn’t beat much at Plumpton, he did it in tremendous style and a 7lb rise is unlikely to stop him.

It could prove significant that Jonjo O’Neill Jr has been booked for his second ride for Paul Nicholls after receiving glowing reviews from the trainer about his first ride. Good ground looks essential to the chance of this horse and options may be few and far between this term.

GETAWAY TRUMP (1.50 Newbury, 1pt win 4/1)

This is a tricky race and for that reason GETAWAY TRUMP looks overpriced. Nicky Henderson’s Caribean Boy almost certainly wants soft ground and may struggle on the back of a 286-day layoff.

If this turns tactical, the selection’s turn of foot on this quick surface should be enough to rein in the odds-on favourite who is arguably better also on a softer surface and is over his minimum trip.

The Paul Nicholls runner has an excellent record on fast ground and ran well here in the Challow Hurdle behind Champ two seasons back. If his jumping can hold up (small field and longer trip to help) he looks the one to side with at the prices.

COUNT MERIBEL (2.25 Newbury, 1pt each-way 11/1)

COUNT MERIBEL has had multiple enteries scrapped this season and it looks as though connections have been cherry picking his return.

I didn’t fancy him on the soft ground at Ascot over2m5 ½f but thankfully he unseated at the fifth so this can be looked at as his first run of the season. He goes extremely well fresh and is now back on a sounder surface for the first time since winning a novice event back in 2018 and this is essentially his handicap debut.

A mark of 142 looks workable and his good ground figures read 111232. His first time out record reads 2112 so he must have a say at the business end.

VISION DES FLOS (3.00 Newbury, 0.5pts eash way 40/1, four places)

Almost every horse in this field have their negatives, Paisley Park needs to bounce back from a heart issue (but should he get any bigger than 9/4 it should quite simply force your hand), Mcfabulous is a woeful price on what he has achieved and stamina is an unknown.

Thyme Hill (I like for the Stayers Hurdle in March) comes here without a run and wasn’t at his best in the Challow Hurdle at this venue and is taking on open graded company for the first time. Summerville Boy is 0-3 on good ground and 0-2 over 3m and looks best at 2m4f and Lisnagar Oscar needs to take a big step forward from his reappearance run.

Sam Spinner, needs to prove he is feeling no lasting effects from his injury last term after pulling up in the Charlie Hall Chase and Honest Vic is stepping up in grade. I like Honest Vic but I have missed the price so my eye is drawn to VISION DES FLOS.

He needs to improve but he has the rating to be competitive in this race and has fitness on his side after a failed chase campaign. He was last seen over hurdles finishing third, beaten half a length by Top Notch and Roksana giving away 8lb, at Aintree over 2m4f on soft ground last November.

He has had one career run over 3m, which came at Punchestown in the Grade 1 Champion Stayers Hurdle when in contention at the final hurdle before a blunder saw him lose all chance. That form would see him have a chance here and he is similarly unexposed over this trip with his breeding suggesting he should improve for it.

He is still only seen and the market is all over the place so with 40/1 available and four places on offer with Sky Bet he is worth a small interest.
