EDGEWOOD (1.45 Haydock, 1pt win 8/1)

A highly competitive race but EDGEWOOD has been in the tracker since finishing out his race strongly at Doncaster last month and back on testing ground he looks the one to side with.

He has improved this season to the tune of 14lb and is unlucky not to be unbeaten on soft ground this term when having to wait for a run at Hamilton only to be denied by less than a length.

His form figures on soft or worse read 1413 so today’s conditions should turn this into a test which will suit his strong finishing effort and this represents a drop in class from his eyecatching effort at Doncaster last time.

MORNING VICAR (1.50 Uttoxeter, 0.5pts each-way 6/1)

Although I focus much of my attention on the novice Chase scene, I don’t tend to get involved unless they have at least one run under their belts. But second-season novice chasers have a distinct advantage at this time of the year.

MORNING VICAR was pulled out last week due to the quick ground and should be more at home on this softer surface. He only had the one run over fences last term but shaped with extreme promise before coming down four from home in a very competitive novice chase at Newbury.

He jumped with fluency up until that point as he cruised through the field and it’s interesting that connections persist with him off the same mark today. With a good record fresh (form figures of 12312), he is taken to make a winning return to action.

CANELO (1.50 Uttoxeter, 0.5pts each-way 9/1)

CANELO had four starts over fences last season with the first of those on return from a 569-day break and he shaped well behind Champagne Court at Sandown looking in desperate need of the run.

His next two efforts were poor on a quicker surface and he jumped miserably but he put in a career-best effort at Huntingdon when last seen earlier this year on heavy ground.

His hurdle form and point-to-point form suggests he should be better than this mark of 131 and its highly likely connections haven’t gotten to the bottom of him, so a chance is taken for him to use his experience over his rivals today.

ESPION (2.23 Uttoxeter, 1pt win 5/1)

The lightly raced ESPION caught the eye in three novice hurdles (two at Wincanton) behind the likes of Flic Ou Voyou, Edwardstone and Fiddlerontheroof but looked as though he was crying out for a step up in trip.

Connections upped him to 2m4f back in March on heavy ground and he bolted up by 11 lengths beating a couple of horses rated 120. He looked raw and still green in the closing stages as he pulled away from his rivals so better can still be expected to come especially over this new trip of 3m on a testing surface.

Not many have too much scope for improvement off their current marks and with the booking of Richard Johnson catching the eye for his handicap debut, he gets a confident vote.

AS YOU LIKE (3.40 Fakenham, 1pt win 9/2)

AS YOU LIKE is a rock-solid candidate here, is improving with each run and despite being a nine-year-old his best days are still ahead of him. He has the advantage of being race fit and he was staying on strongly in the closing stages behind a useful horse in Soupy Soups at Perth and, although 4lb higher, he should give another bold bid.

He is unexposed over 3m with just the two starts but his career-best performances have now come over this trip and he offers a little value over the top of the market who are returning from an absence.
