DUBAI MIRAGE (1.30 Haydock, 1.5pts win 4/1)

DUBAI MIRAGE makes plenty of appeal off this handicap mark of 87 on the balance of his form and he wasn’t disgraced on handicap debut in the Britannia when finishing twelfth on unsuitable soft ground, with the handicapper kind enough to drop him 5lb in the weights.

He is clearly not straightforward given the cheekpieces he wears and he was a little complicated when a runaway winner at Kempton two starts ago but connections have gelded him now.

It is always a risk backing one after such an operation but the trainer does have an excellent record first time after a gelding operation on the all-weather and there is no reason it shouldn’t be the same story for this particular horse on turf.

CAP FRANCAIS (2.25 Ascot, 1pt each-way 10/1)

This is competitive with Shelir, Via Serendipity and Kasbaan all having valid claims but CAP FRANCAIS is only 5lb higher for his emphatic win on seasonal return when looking better than ever and he can be forgiven his run last time on soft ground at Haydock, when carrying 10st on his back and not granted the best passage in the closing stages.

He makes more appeal with Oisin Murphy on board and it’s likely he still has more to offer and he has been overlooked.

OMNIVEGA (3.35 Ascot, 1.5pts win 11/2)

OMINVEGA has done all his best work on the all-weather but he only had the three starts on turf (two at Newmarket one on soft ground) and it may be that it has been the headgear and the gelding operation at the backend of last season that has improved him rather than the surface.

His performance after a 124-day break at Kempton was a career-best effort off a handicap mark of 85 and he was giving 11lb plus to two improving three-year-olds. The runner-up Cepheus, boosted the form next time when running out a convincing winner at Goodwood off a mark of 89 and is now rated 96.

This strong test of stamina will suit given his half brother Verema improved for 1m4f+ and it would be folly to think there is not more to come.

PRINCESS POWER (4.45 Ascot, 1pt win 7/1)

PRINCESS POWER bounced back to form at Sandown last time despite becoming a little unbalanced on the undulations when attempting to quicken and the handicapper has dropped her another 1lb.

Inclusive of jockey Danny Redmond’s claim, she is now 8lb lower when winning over 5½ furlongs at Bath and on her last winning mark over 6f.

She is 6lb lower than when beaten 2½ lengths by Que Amoro over this trip last term at York in a race that has worked out really well and it may just be that this stiff 5f is right up her street.

EVENING SUN (4.35 Newmarket, 2pts win 6/4)

EVENING SUN wasn’t seen to best effect behind Tsar last time out when hardly put in the race but he has shown plenty in his previous three starts to think that he can leave this mark of 88 well behind him and move on to better things.

Back at Newmarket where he was an impressive winner on seasonal return, he should take all the beating receiving weight from his main rival Laser Show.

GOOD BIRTHDAY (5.10 Newmarket, 1pt win 8/1)

GOOD BIRTHDAY was a selection for this column last time out but in hindsight he was undone by the draw in stall 22 of 22, losing plenty of ground at the start of the race and never really able to get involved.

He can be forgiven his run over 1m4f on soft ground the time before and he is back at Newmarket today, a track that has seen him perform with great credit in more competitive races than today’s, including on seasonal return.

How some bookmakers have him priced as the rank outsider is just lazy form work given the form of last season and he is now 2lb lower than the York run and gets cheekpieces for the first time with Silvestre De Sousa back on board.

His fifth here on the July course is the strongest piece of handicap form on offer and he is back on the same mark and a more prominent ride will see him to better effect with Emissary the big danger.

OUTRAGE (4.55 Haydock, 1pt win 7/2)

OUTRAGE caught the eye behind our winning selection Blue De Vega at Newmarket two weeks ago and he has fallen to an attractive mark of 81 and although you have to go all the way back to 2018 for his last turf victory it did come here at Haydock off a 4lb lower mark and given this is just his second start for the stable he is worth siding with to go one better.
