Llandinabo Lad (12.10 Haydock, 1pt Win - 5/1)

LLANDINABO LAD makes plenty of appeal in this hot contest at the prices and the booking of Richard Johnson catches the eye. The Tom Symonds’ runner looked to hold plenty of scope for improvement when winning as he liked at Bangor in the mud on seasonal return and he should take a step forward from that first run after 323 days off the track. His Bumper form from last season looked strong having had the likes of Champion Bumper fourth, Third Time Lucki, and the 146 rated Dovecoat Hurdle winner Highway One O Two in behind. He was no match for Supreme Novice Hurdle third Chantry House in a bumper but he filled the placings amongst some now useful horses in that contest. He can take this step up in class in his stride on just his second start over hurdles after clocking some good figures at Bangor and is taken to get the better of Severance.

Southern Harvest (12.20 Ascot, 2pts Win - 11/10)

I fell in love with this horse after his run at Wincanton last season and this looks a very good starting point to kick his season off. He has seemingly been ready for a while with multiple entries scrapped and Paul Nicholls looks to have found a good opportunity in a race where a few have questions to answer. The trainer sends a strong team to Ascot today and SOUTHFIELD HARVEST has the strongest form on offer from last term and is from a family that improves with age, so gets a confident vote to land this race on return.

Secret Reprieve (12.40 Haydock, 1;5pts Win - 5/1)

Now SECRET REPRIEVE steps into Handicap Company he is 12lbs better off with today’s rival Newtide for a 2 ½ length defeat at Ffos Las last year and he is open to any amount of improvement on this step back up in trip for the first time in handicaps. The booking of Robbie Power is another reason to be optimistic about his chances and Evan Williams has a knack of getting these well-handicapped horses ready first time up. Deise Aba, is still on the radar but may need this today after improving throughout the season last term and, Pop Rockstar, although well-handicapped, may-be wanting for a sounder surface.

De Machine (12.55 Ascot, 1pt Win - 5/2)

The first start over fences saw DE MACHINE run out a comfortable winner at Uttoxeter on seasonal return and it has been a race this column has profited on handsomely over the past few weeks. He is up 10lbs in the weights and now and 12lb worse off with third-placed Young Bull who re-opposes but the win was so commanding he is taken to confirm that form despite those factors. The second from that race, Morning Vicar, won off a 4lb higher mark next time and the fourth looked as though he was going to win next time comfortably off a 1lb lower mark so the rise in the weights doesn’t look as daunting as it first did. It was such a step forward on what he had shown over hurdles that he surely has more to come and there are concerns with Young Bull going right-handed so Kerry Lee’s runner gets the vote.

Le Ligerian (1.50 Haydock, 0.5pts Each-Way - 22/1)

You can make a case for many of the runners in this field but LE LIGERIEN is over-priced. He ran a good time figure at Chepstow on seasonal return when the ground would have been quick enough for him and despite doing too much too soon he was in contention at the second last flight before fitness took its toll. He actually clocked a circuit time figure quicker than Tea Clipper and Flash the Steel who finished first and second in the Silver Trophy off marks of 134 and 138. That run assured his well being so a 1lb drop in the weights to a mark of 133 was a welcome sign and a return to the softer ground will certainly be in his favour with form figures on 01120. He is 6lb higher than when winning over 2m here at Haydock of soft ground in January and recorded a time figure faster than the Supreme Novice Hurdle trial on the card by 8 seconds. If Richard Johnson can keep him under control at the early stage of the race he may prove tough to catch.

Imperial Alcazar (14.25 Haydock, 1pt Win - 6/1)

IMPERIAL ALCAZAR is open to significant improvement now handicapping over the correct trip of 3m and he is entitled to improve again this season after an excellent Novice campaign last year. He looks feasibly treated off this mark of 140 and mixed it with the best of the British in the middle distance Novice ranks last term. There are dangers everywhere in this field but his best days are certainly in front of him and this race normally produces a high-class talent and he has the scope to do be just that.

Capeland (3.17 Ascot , 1pt Win - 11/2)

CAPELAND returns to the scene of his excellent victory last year and is now 7lb higher but has the fitting of the first time cheekpieces to eke out further improvement. This race looks weaker than the one he won last term and he can be easily forgiven his return effort when sprawling on landing so with Harry Cobden in the saddle he gets the vote. His second time out record reads well with form figures of 11241 and his form figures on soft ground outside of graded company read 112611. Stablemate Magic Saint makes a quick turn around for this race 8 days after his win at Cheltenham which looks suspicious and he could be in here to compress the weights given without his presence Capeland would be carrying 11st11.
