MEHDAAYIH (2.30 Ascot, 1pt each-way 10/1)

This could well have been the target for MEHDAAYIH who has a good record fresh and steps back up to 1m4f for the first time since winning a Group 2 in Saint-Cloud in impressive fashion.

She has excuses for meeting defeat in the Nassau Stakes when asked for too much in front over 1m2f by Frankie Dettori and I am happy to forgive the poor run over the same trip at Longchamp next time.

Her two runs at this Ascot venue against the boys can both be viewed very positively and her form of a 4¼-length defeat to Magical is among the best on offer. Back up in trip and arriving here fresher than most, she has a fair each-way chance in an open event.

EVERLANES (2.53 Stratford, 1pt win 11/2)

EVERLANES was going from strength to strength earlier this year, improving 14lb in three runs, and it’s highly likely she has more to come given her strong hurdle form so a chance is taken that she handles this left-handed track (been kept right handed).

The form of her chase debut run at Wincanton behind Annie Mc (144) reads well as does her two victories, including her latest run at Kempton when pulling clear with the rapidly improving Soldier Of Love (fell) who is now 4/4 and rated 144 this season.

It’s highly likely she is still well ahead of the handicapper on a mark of 117, with the form of her races underrated and working out so well. The drop back to this 2m5f trip looks a good move by connections on return.

LE PATRIOTE (3.56 Market Rasen, 1pt win 3/1)

The second-season novice angle comes in to play again here and LE PATRIOTE is worth taking a chance on in this small but select field.

He shaped nicely on his only start over fences last term when given an uphill task in Grade 2 company behind Mister Fisher and Al Dancer. He was beaten 12 lengths but was in good shape on the turn in for home before becoming outpaced and finding the quality of event too much after the penultimate flight.

The return to a quicker surface, on which his form figures read 1118, will see him in a better light and his experience will become invaluable in this much lesser contest and with the booking of Sam Twiston-Davies catching the eye.

Betfair Hurdle winner Pic D’Orhy is an exciting recruit to novice chasing and will likely prove popular in the market for a trainer in fine form but he unseated on his only start over fences in France and hasn’t proved the most reliable over hurdles but he rates the main danger.

KING OTTOKAR (4.15 Ascot, 1pt each-way 8/1)

KING OTTOKAR has taken a step back in the right direction since being gelded and the application of the visor has seen him finish out his races stronger, so the fact the handicapper has dropped him down to a mark of 100 (-4lbs) is a welcome sign to land this big pot.

He caught the eye at Doncaster on handicap debut off a 2lb higher mark when cruising into the race before finding his passage blocked and finishing under hands and heels riding.

He returns to the scene of his career-best effort which came in the Group 3 Hampton Court Stakes last year and, although this is on the straight track, he should be well suited to this stiff mile. If he returns to that level of form, he should take some beating in this highly competitive race.

ORBAAN (4.15 Ascot, 0.5pts each-way 16/1)

The one I want to have a cover bet on is ORBAAN for David O’Meara who has won this race twice in the last two years and the booking of Daniel Tudhope suggests this is the stable’s first string.

This horse has been in the tracker since York and has caught the eye on a few occasions most notably over course and distance last time out behind Tempus when given far too much to do off a slow pace.

He finished strongly there and his two runs in new headgear seem to be offering clues to a bigger performance. He is 6lb better off with Tempus and older horses have an excellent record in this race.

GLENTIES (4.20 Catterick, 1pt win 5/1)

GLENTIES runs here 1lb lower than when starting the season but he has bumped into a few rapidly improving rivals along the way but connections looks to have found an opportunity where many of his rivals have done their winning and are weighted to the hilt.

On the back of a good effort at Leicester under similar conditions and with the blinkers retained, he is taken to get a deserved success. The booking of Joe Fanning suggests that a prominent ride is imminent and on this heavy ground he should prove hard to catch.
