ROKSANA (1.15 Ascot, 3pts win 8/11)

The shade of odds-on is a gift of a price for ROKSANA. She had been screaming for a step back up to 3m on many occasions last term and hasn’t disappointed when doing so.

She brings solid form to the table after her third in the Long Walk Hurdle over course and distance, which is above and beyond anything any of these rivals have achieved, and given she is unexposed over 3m there could be more to come.

She has had just the four starts over 3m with form figures now reading 3122 and all of those have come in Grade 2 or Grade 1 company and there are no qualms about the ground, track or potential of her rivals. Magic Of Light is likely to make the running and Roksana’s superior turn of foot in the closing stages should leave her chief market rival for dead.

HIJACK (2.05 Haydock, 1pt win 3/1)

Most of these make little appeal so confidence is high that the unexposed HIJACK can get his head back in front now stepped up in trip.

Soft ground looks to be the key to this horse with form figures of 3211 in testing conditions and he took a big step forward at Haydock last time, according to the clock, when strong at the finish behind The Cob over 2m3.

This is a marked step up in trip to 3m but he was outpaced on the home turn at Haydock before putting in a strong closing sectional so the trip should suit. He is on a fair mark and less exposed than his rivals with favourite Farrants Way coming here after a brutal race 14 days ago at Chepstow, so it may be Chef D’Oeuvre along with Potters Hedger who give the selection most to think about.

PADDYS MOTORBIKE (1.50 Ascot, 1pt each-way 15/2)

PADDY’S MOTORBIKE is the horse I mentioned on the GG Weekend Podcast who I fancied to go well at double figure-odds and I still think he is worth siding with despite those odds being in freefall.

His time figure performances suggest he is better than this handicap mark of 130 (126 inclusive of the jockey claim) and he has improved significantly for the switch to Sam Thomas.

His best performances have all come on soft ground with form figures of 1312 in the last three years and he is unexposed for a nine-year-old after just nine starts over hurdles. The one I fear is Lightly Squeeze who is entitled to improve still but the selection has shown he is more than capable of landing a handicap off this mark in his last two starts in novice and maiden company.

DE FORGOTTEN ONE (2.25 Ascot, 1pt win 9/2)

DE FORGOTTEN ONE looks ahead of the handicapper and is one of two unexposed horses in this field (Enqarde the other). He looks to have turned a corner this term for his new handler and after two runs in France (one win,) he returned to these shores with an excellent third in the Cross-Country Chase at Cheltenham but failed to see out that extreme 3m6f trip.

He travelled strongly throughout and faded inside the home straight but dropped back in trip to 2m3f next time at Catterick to bolt up by 13 lengths and take the scalp of another unexposed well-handicapped rival so the 10lb rise in the weights doesn’t look too harsh.

Today’s step back up to 3m will hold no fears and he is unexposed over this trip and has form at Stratford with a win over Lord Du Mensil (149) that makes this handicap mark of 130 look lenient.

WAITING PATIENTLY (3.35 Ascot, 1pt win 11/4)

I am keen to take on Politologue given I think his form is worthless and while he is a good horse I think he is under-priced on what he has achieved. The drop back in trip shouldn’t be a problem for WAITING PATIENTLY who is a fascinating supplement by connections. He ran a blistering closing sectional in the Tingle Creek behind Defi Du Seuil last year and had the above mentioned favourite in behind on that occasion and with the uncertainty surrounding Philip Hobbs’ runner this Grade 1 is there for the taking. In the hope that Waiting Patiently is not held-up too far off the pace this time around and that connections have learned there lesson this could be a well deserved win for the talented ten-year-old.
