SHELDON (1.20 Hereford, 2pts win 4/1)

SHELDON looks a nice horse to keep on side and he took a big step forward on hurdles debut to leave his bumper form well behind. He finished third in a strongly run race but failed to handle the downhill run at Cheltenham and made an almost race-ending blunder at the final flight, but managed to pick up and close to the line.

He left plenty to work on there and this flat track will see him in a better light but his circuit time managed to eclipse that of the other winners on the same card bar the Juvenile Grade 1 Hurdle, in which he was only 13 lengths slower despite running on deteriorating ground, and he clocked the same three-out to the finish time as Adajio depite making a big blunder at the last.

He has almost certainly run up to a mark of 125 + on that occasion and, with improvement forthcoming, he gets a strong vote of confidence here.

SUNSET WEST (1.50 Hereford, 1pt each-way 4/1

The favourite looks hard to oppose on the figures but this is a sharp track and it can favour those who are ridden prominently, so in the hope that SUNSET WEST is ridden in the same manner as he was at Newcastle, he may be home and hosed before Champagnesuperover gets organised.

He jumped out to the right and lost plenty of ground and did far too much too soon at that venue only to be caught by Saturday’s progressive winner (frustrating as he was originally in the column) Enqarde.

That race was run at a strong gallop and it is the best form on offer in the field and, with the help of a talented 7lb claimer, he is in receipt of 12lb from the favourite. On his novice hurdle form at Wetherby, he looks on a very fair mark and that effort can be upgraded given they went a slow circuit pace and he was undone by his racing position.

The Philip Kirby runner will likely prove better than this mark off 117 (effectively 110 today) in time so gets the vote to take advantage of the favourite’s quick return to the track.

STORM FORCE BEN (2.50 Hereford, 1pt win 9/4)

STORM FORCE BEN will surely get his head in front off this handicap mark sooner or later and this looks a good opportunity against some exposed rivals to do so. He can have his effort upgraded from Exeter two weeks ago when running the inside rail over 3m in tough conditions and despite giving the progressive winner first run he kept on gamely in the closing stages. The track is a slight question mark but he is a strong progressive stayer to keep on side.
