GENEROUS DAY (2.57 Kempton, 0.5pts each-way 28/1)

None of these look thrown in off their current handicap marks and Kempton can lend itself to a horse that has previously performed well so a chance is taken on GENEROUS DAY.

Henry Oliver’s eight-year-old returns to action after wind surgery and only 1lb higher than when a good course winner over 2m4f in November last year at 33/1. That race has worked out very well and he was given an 8lb rise for that victory up to a mark of 134 but has been dropped a total of 7lbs for two poor efforts and for one (latest) here at Kempton when staying on nicely off a mark of 132 only to be hampered by a faller.

He has gone well fresh in the past so it would be no surprise should he put in a good shift first time up today and there are question marks surrounding a few of the runners, so an each way chance is taken.

SCEAU ROYAL (3.10 Ffos Las, 1.5pts each-way 11/2)

The roll of honour for past winners of this race suggest you need to have a class edge but perhaps fall short in top graded races and that’s exactly the category that SCEAU ROYAL falls into.

He hasn’t run over hurdles since February last year when beaten just inder a length by Grand Sancy in the Grade 2 Elite Hurdle at Wincanton but the fact that he was dropped 4lb for that runs looks baffling to me, especially given the third bolted up next time in a Grade 2 event and was raised 2lb and now sits on a mark of 155.

A mark of 150 in this company shouldn’t be beyond the high-class chaser and confidence can be taken from the absence of the likes of Harry Cobden and Nico De Boinville from his rivals’ backs. None of these look extremely well treated on the balance of their form and a few may have eyes on future targets down the line.

The selection runs well when fresh with form figures after a break of 100 days or more reading 61112 and the recent wind op looks an overdue procedure that can enhance his claims.

CAPONE (5.10 Sedgefield, 1pt win 9/2)

CAPONE put in a career best effort at Uttoxeter last time out and a 5lb rise for that win looks manageable on the balance of his form this season and today’s race represents a slight ease in grade into 0-130 company. He looks a young horse very much on an upward curve and the step up in trip along with the tongue- tie looks to have been the reason for further improvement so gets the vote to continue winning ways.
