GUNMETAL (1.15 Ripon, 1.5pts win 13/2)

GUNMETAL has been out of sorts in comparison to the heights of last season but it should be said that he has ran his career best RPR here at Ripon and has course form figures of 1 and 2. Those runs came off marks of 97 and 98 so he makes plenty of appeal here off a mark of 89 despite being due to go down 3lb in the handicap.

Focusing on those two runs, he is 1llb better off with Citron Major and 7lb better off with Bossipop and this is a drop back into class 3 company and the hope is that a return to this venue sparks him back into life.

HENLEY (1.45 Ripon, 0.5pts each-way 7/1)

This is a weak enough Class 6 and HENLEY was this column’s NAP when he was a non-runner last month in a better race than this, so now he is back into a class 6 race off an even lower handicap mark, he is worth chancing.

He was too keen for his own good at Pontefract last time in a Class 5 but previous to that run he did well when racing on the wrong side of the track at Thirsk on seasonal reappearance in this grade of race. The winner is 9lb higher, the third is 8lb higher and the fourth is 3lb higher while the selection is 4lb lower.

I was wrong about the 6f suiting this horse last month and the drop back to 5f looks a good move by connections and the form of his fourth-placed finish here last year off a mark of 71 would be good enough to win this. This is only his second attempt at this level and he has a high draw against the running rail and the hope is that he can make all under Barry McHugh.

WASEEM FARIS (3.10 Bath, 1pt each-way 20/1)

Yes, I know, WASEEM FARIS again! But…the eleven year old has been denied a clear run on his last two visits to this venue in both Class 4 and Class 5 races and has not been seen to best effect given he is at his best inside the final half furlong of this 5½ furlong trip.

The handicapper has dropped him 6lb in those two runs and he now drops into a Class 6 race for the first time in his illustrious career. He is on a career-low mark of 65 and his jockey claims 5lb off his back meaning he is effectively 19lbs lower than when winning here last May in a Class 4 race.

His last two RPR’s are not far off winning this race and this is the easiest assignment he has had in his career to date and quite frankly if he can’t win this or go very close its time to move on.

SILVER CLIFFS (4.10 Bath, 2pts each-way 15/2)

Ethics Approval is a horse I have been keen to follow but his antics last time at Newmarket have now pushed connections to apply the blinkers, which are a positive, but the drop back in trip is a question mark as his best work was done at the finish.

SILVER CLIFFS wasn’t seen to best effect on handicap debut at Sandown when short of room and is one that will appreciate this step up to 1m. He has been given an education in all three of his starts for Gary Moore and the penny looked to have dropped in the closing stages of his recent run and it’s highly likely he will build on that here.
