KERB LINE (2.58 Newton Abbot, 1pt win 7/2)

KERB LINE showed glimpses of promise in maiden and novice company catching the eye on multiple occasions in better races than this and he returned with a career-best at Fontwell behind a subsequent winner on just his second handicap start after a 210-day break and is taken to build on that now race fit.

The winner hadn’t won for three years but benefited from his track position in a very slowly run affair there and the selection was better than the bare result after being held up well off the pace but finished with a good kick only to be denied by 2 lengths.

This race promises to be run at a much stronger tempo so things should fall into place off this 2lb higher mark and is taken to shed his maiden tag at the expense of The Raven’s Return and Jack Valentine who may both benefit from the run.

LOVE DREAMS (6.00 Chelmsford, 2pts win 13/2)

LOVE DREAMS has been in good form this season on the back of a gelding operation with an excellent third here over 1m on his penultimate start under a 5lb claimer when behind a subsequent winner and a progressive filly.

His latest effort at Goodwood over 1m1f on heavy ground was very eyecatching doing well from a wide draw in stall 13. From that race, the winner, the second and the fourth were all drawn in double figures. The winner has since gone in again and the second won next time out while the fourth placed on his next two starts (has excuses for one).

The key to this horse is the trip and a drop back to 7f should make a world of difference and he is now 17ls lower than his last winning handicap mark which came in June 2019 at Brighton. His career form figures on the all weather read 3318016 (2/9) and of those runs just four have come over today’s trip of 7f which read 3116.

Of his runs here at Chelmsford over 7f his form figures read 3801 coming off handicap marks of 87, 95 (Class 2), 102 (Class 2) and 95 (Class 2). He now drops into a Class 4 race over 7f for the first time and looks well treated on the balance of his form this season and must go close.

THE CITY’S PHANTOM (8.30 Chelmsford, 1pt win 9/2)

This is competitive but THE CITY’S PHANTOM is the least exposed of these runners and he has shown enough to think that he is more than capable off this mark of 82.

He didn’t get a race run to suit last time at Newbury in arguably a stronger race than the one he faces today and this drop in grade and switch to the all weather could be just the ticket.

He is bred to improve for the switch to this surface and he is entitled to come on for the run at Newbury which came after a short break and he looks well treated on the balance of his two-year-old form.
