DHARAN (12.30 Wetherby, 1pt each-way 11/2)

Mont Segur’s hurdle debut wasn’t devoid of promise but he was well beaten by the winner and the time figure of the race was slower than the 3m hurdle on the card.

He looks worth taking on at the odds and DHARAN may be able to build on his promising second behind a useful type at Ayr. His time figure was good and, although he found less than looked likely, he stuck to the task in gutsy fashion after travelling powerfully through the contest on heavy ground.

With natural improvement, he should be involved in the thick of things and on that run in December he comes out top on my figures so gets the vote ahead of Dreams Of Home for the in-form Donald McCain yard.

ONWARD ROUTE (1.30 Wetherby, 1pt win 10/3)

ONWARD ROUTE has some strong bumper form to his name and made a promising start to life over hurdles at Newcastle behind the useful Enarde (124). It was only a few minor errors down the home straight that saw him lose momentum and fade over 2m6f.

The race was run at a very strong gallop courtesy of the improving Sunset West (117) but he travelled through the race with zest and today’s drop back in trip will certainly see him finishing strong. There is an air of unknown about the Skelton runner but the seven-year-old looks worth keeping on side so gets the vote.

POP THE CORK (2.35 Wetherby, 2pts win 6/1)

French Paradoxe is likely to prove popular after his Newbury form was given a boost by the runner-up who improved at Wincanton. However, that race recorded the slowest circuit time of the whole day and was 10 seconds behind the debut Juvenile winner, Goodbye Stranger, so the step up in trip doesn’t look a good move.

Elysian Flame was disappointing two days ago at Exeter and is turned out quickly, which can go one of two ways, so POP THE CORK is the suggestion. He ran a good time figure on seasonal return over 2m here at Wetherby and that form has been boosted multiple times.

He was tapped for a turn of foot against Courtland next time at Uttoxeter but stuck to the task well suggesting that a step up in trip would suit. The five-year-old is lightly raced and open to plenty of improvement so is preferred to those that are weighted to the hilt or reverting back to this discipline after being over fences.
