OISTRAKH LE NOIR (1.25 Fakenham, 1pt each-way 7/1)

OISTRAKH LE NOIR is a viable alternative to the favourite who was clearly very good at Newcastle but did dictate matters and was well positioned to win a race that turned into a sprint.

The selection had some fine form over hurdles two years ago and shaped with plenty of promise in much stronger races in his two starts this term. The first of those came over hurdles when he shaped as though he needed the run after 917 days off but loomed up menacingly before fading.

He ran well in a much stronger race on chase debut at Kempton when held up to learn his trade and this represents a big drop in grade. He is worth taking a flyer on now Daryl Jacob is back aboard and could cause an upset.

CROSSGALESFARMGAME (1.55 Fakenham, 1pt win 9/4)

There is a chance that something could run back into form in this race but I am happy to side with the in-form horse in CORSSGALESFAMEGAME who has shaped as though she would appreciate this stiffer test in recent starts.

She lacks the pace to get involved over 2½ miles and has stayed on strongly in two competitive mares races that have been run in good times. She won’t mind the rain as the slower the ground the better for her, she is relatively unexposed in handicaps and meets many horses that are out of form or, in Canyon City’s case, wants better ground.

The market may hint that Lable Des Obeaux bounced back to a bit of form at Haydock last time but the final circuit figure was very slow in comparison to the other races on the card and he is effectively 10lb higher here without the claimer aboard.

ASTIGAR (2.15 Exeter, 2pts win 9/4)

Its slightly baffling how Patroclus is odds-on in this event when he was readily brushed aside by the winner with the minimum of fuss and only finished within a head of a 118-rated horse that has been well beaten since.

It’s worth chancing ASTIGAR who showed up well in a bumper at Uttoxeter in November despite being keen in the early stages. He got to within a head of Solwara One who was only beaten by Ask A Honey Bee prior and is since a convincing hurdle winner at Doncaster and took care of two useful sorts in L’Incorrigible and Truckers Pass (recorded 130 time figures).

That is the strongest form on offer and David Pipe has landed this race twice in the last six years so his hurdling debutant gets the vote.
