THE COB (2.55 Haydock, 1pt each-way 7/1)

THE COB looks a progressive young horse on a steep upward curve and is taken to make light of this opening mark of 124 on handicap debut for Ben Pauling. His bumper form along with his two starts in maiden and novice company last term have worked out well enough to suggest he has a future in this sphere and his best work has come on soft or heavy ground so conditions should suit.

He chased home Ubetya (129) (135 fences) at Uttoxeter over 2m on hurdles debut in January in a good time and the pair pulled 11 lengths clear of the remainder. The third and fourth are rated 120 and 119 while the sixth was a solid yardstick and is now rated 128.

He then ran third at Warwick behind the useful Hooligan (135) and Nickolson (134) with Trincomalee (128) in behind but was far too keen in the early stages to do himself justice and sauntered home once beaten in his own time.

He was commanding on seasonal return at Uttoxeter when stepped up in trip to 2m4f and this test on heavy ground over 2m3f should be right up his street. Ben Pauling has booked the excellent David Basson this unexposed and progressive type with more to come on this switch to handicaps.

Previous column winner Goobinator is sure to be seen to better effect over this longer distance given his excellent attitude when landing the odds at Ayr so is feared the most ahead of the returning Minella Charmer.

PREMIER POWER (6.00 Kempton, 2pts win 6/4)

PREMIER POWER has looked every inch a Group horse in the making so should have little difficulty off this mark of 100 on the switch to handicap company. He is entitled to improve for his Lingfield win on seasonal return and this race lacks depth so it could prove excellent placing by connections.

He ran a final three-furlong figure here at Kempton last term of 34.3 seconds on the bridle when winning by five lengths. To put that into perspective Soldier’s Minute, his closest market rival, ran 34.82 when all out to beat Benny And The Jets on his penultimate start and nothing in the field has matched that speed (early fractions taken into account).

He looks potentially top class and on the back of wind surgery in March he could have even more to offer. He is drawn well in stall four and open to further improvement now granted a strong early pace, which will help him settle and is taken to make it three wins on the bounce before going up in grade.
