International Hurdle Tips 2025 – Constitution Hill The Star Attraction At Cheltenham

Constitution Hill is the standout name at Trials Day at Cheltenham on Saturday afternoon, as the most talked about horse in National Hunt training makes a swift return to the track after winning the Christmas Hurdle impressively. The 2023 Champion Hurdle missed most of last season, but returned with a sparkling victory over Lossiemouth in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton Park, and with that Irish raider not being declared for Saturday’s International Hurdle then Nicky Henderson’s superstar should have a penalty kick!

CONSTITUTION HILL

(Nico De Boinville/Nicky Henderson)

Undoubtedly the best horse in Britain, Constitution Hill has been the most talked about equine talent since Frankel and he showed when cruising to success at Kempton at Christmas that the fire still burns bright and he was instantly made a red-hot favourite to regain his Champion Hurdle crown. Having missed the second half of last season through injury, the former Supreme Novices’ Hurdle and Champion Hurdle winner made a sumptuous return to the track as he kicked well clear of Lossiemouth to add another Grade 1 contest.

In the aftermath of that romp Henderson was quick to say that he wasn’t going to run him before the Champion Hurdle in March, but the legendary handler had a real change of heart and is set to send him to Cheltenham on Saturday, where he’s going to be one of the shortest priced favourites in recent times. Facing four inferior rivals, many will think about backing the distance he wins the race by and if he turns up then it is a matter how far his jockey Nico De Boinville wants to win by.

However, having only raced once in over a year they will be looking to sharpen his race fitness in this contest and while it could prove to be a bit of work come the finish line, it’s an ideal chance for the masses flocking to Prestbury Park to witness greatness in the flesh and a comfortable win should cement his place as the one to beat in the Champion Hurdle come March.

REST OF THE FIELD

A Group horse rated in the 100s on the Flat, Brentford Hope has been a solid enough performer in the National Hunt sphere, but has struggled to land a blow at the highest level to date. Harry Derham’s raider ended last season with a gallant second place finish in a competitive handicap hurdle at the Punchestown Festival, but that form is not going to give Constitution Hill any worries. Second in the Grade 2 Elite Hurdle at Wincanton on his comeback run, he was last seen failing to fire at Windsor last weekend and a quick turnaround here is going to give him a huge task.

A Graded winner in his younger days, Fils D’Oudairies is the Irish representative in this year’s International Hurdle, but Gordon Elliott’s charge is certainly not the force of old. He was last seen pulling up over fences, so this is merely a race to try and get some decent prize money. Dan Skelton’s Joyeux Machin and the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained Spirits Bay complete the five-strong field and with over £26k available for second place will be eyeing up that prize, but have no form that mean they deserve their place in the same race as Constitution Hill. The former was 11th of 14 at Cheltenham off 135 in a handicap last time out, while Spirits Bay is only rated 125, so miles behind the red-hot favourite on figures.

VERDICT

This should turn into a procession for CONSTITUTION HILL and the value lies within the distance markets. If Nico De Boinville wanted to win by 25 lengths he could comfortably, but with the Champion Hurdle less than two months away he could just take it easy after the last flight, so just look at backing the unders when it comes to distance betting. A Constitution Hill win by around 5-7 lengths looks about the way to go.
