International Racing – Best Bets at Gulfstream Park on Saturday

Horse racing

We were on the mark with 7/2 winner Geography with our US Racing Tips yesterday and we are back again on the hunt for more winners while British and Irish racing remains in lockdown. Here are our best bets for the meeting at Gulfstream Park, which features the Grade 1 Florida Derby.

TIZ THE LAW (Grade 1 Florida Derby, 1m1f dirt, 10.36pm)

Let’s start with the final race of the day, the Grade 1 Florida Derby which features a host of promising three-year-olds.

Tiz The Law deserves to be favourite after thrashing the reopposing Ete Indian on his comeback run at this track last month. He’s been campaigned at higher levels than his rivals and the only time he’s been beaten in four career starts was on a sloppy track and after he’d suffered trouble in running in the Grade 2 Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs in October.

Clearly the one to beat.

PLUS QUE PARFAIT (Gulfstream Park race 3, 1m1/2f turf, 4.30pm)

We’ll take a chance that Plus Que Parfait can return to winning ways on only his third turf start. He’s been running on dirt recently but his sixth in the Grade 1 Belmont Derby on his penultimate start was a decent performance. Clearly takes a huge drop in class on this turf return and could outrun his price.

WALK IN MARRAKESH (Gulfstream Park race 7, 1m turf, Listed, 6.30pm)

Won three times, including at Listed Level for Mark Johnston when trained in Britain, and has been unlucky in her two starts across the Atlantic, finishing second in a Grade 1 at Woodbine when still trained by Johnston and a runner-up at Grade 3 level in the Florida Oaks on her first start for trainer Ignacio Correas. Arguably would have won that with a clear run and can gain a deserved win now dropping to Listed level.

CAP DE CREUS (Gulfstream Park race 10, 1m3f Turf, Grade 3, 8.17pm)

You can forget this one’s disappointing run last time as she was trapped seven wide going round the final bend. Had previously been staying on strongly over shorter trips and there is plenty of evidence that she will improve for what is considered almost a marathon trip in the US. Fearsome combination of Todd Pletcher and Joel Rosario team up with this filly and she should run a huge race.

ZULU ALPHA (Gulfstream Park race 12, 1m4f turf, Grade 2, 9.26pm)

Favourite Zulu Alpha has won at Grade 1 and Grade 2 level on his last two starts and will be many people’s idea of the banker on the card and it’s easy to see why. He may have a tricky draw in stall 10 to overcome but he has showed true class in his last two wins and can edge it over his rivals.
