There’s a superb afternoon of Flat racing on ITV on Saturday afternoon as nine races take place in just over two hours of coverage. The Group 1 Sprint Cup is the feature race of the day at Haydock Park at 3:35pm and our in-house tipster Steve Chambers has a selection for that event. Check out all his best bets for Ascot and Haydock here…
2:10pm Ascot – Chapel Down Handicap
An eye-catching sixth in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot, Roger Varian’s FRENCH DUKE then went on to win a handicap at Goodwood at the end of the August. Showing a fine turn of foot that day, the three-year-old son of Sea The Stars looked to be significantly ahead of the handicapper. His win that day came off a mark of 88 and he lines up in Ascot’s 2:10pm off 97, but he looks a potential Group performer.
Returning to the Berkshire track he will need to improve, but he shaped like there’s a lot more to come and he can get the better of the likes of Goodwood Odyssey and The Reverend, who both come into the race in excellent form.

Matthew Sutcliffe’s Value Punts – Six Selections Including Group 1 Outsider
There is loads of racing to enjoy on ITV this weekend, including the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock. Matty Sutcliffe fancies a 14/1 outsider in that showpiece race, as well as five others taking part in Saturday’s action. Published: 2.15pm Thursday, 5th September (Odds correct at time of writing) 1:15 Haydock – Best Odds…
Thu 05 Sep 20242:25pm Haydock – Betfair Exchange Old Borough Cup Handicap
GRAND ALLIANCE hasn’t been seen on the track for over a year and he will have the burden of carrying top weight to victory in the Old Borough Cup at 2:25pm at Haydock on Saturday. However, the former Group 3 winner has shown he is a class act on his day and if he can recapture that sort of form that saw him win the John Porter Stakes then he has to be given a huge chance here.
William Buick takes the ride on the Charlie Fellowes-trained raider which is a huge positive and having last been seen on the track finishing second in a Group 2 event then he is the proven class act in the. Taking on race-fit rivals here will be tough, but Grand Alliance is a top notch stayer and is a fascinating runner.
3:00pm Haydock – Betfair Be Friendly Handicap
Karl Burke’s LOOKING FOR LYNDA ran a huge race when third in a hugely competitive York handicap last month and the consistent four-year-old will look to build on that run off a 1lb higher mark in the 3:00pm at Haydock on Saturday. Up with the pace for most of the way, he was just reeled in late on, so a repeat of that effort should see him finish close here.
He’s not got his head in front since last September, but in that time he’s run some mighty races in defeat and while this is going to need a career best he could be one to strike gold again and can land this prize off bottom weight.
3:35pm Haydock – Betfair Sprint Cup Stakes
A smart bunch of three-year-olds will line up for the Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock at 3:35pm, but the standout one looks to be INISHERIN, who showed when bounding to a sparkling victory in the Commonwealth Cup, that he is arguably the best of the bunch. There are some decent older horses, but the three-year-olds can dominate this event and Kevin Ryan’s sprint star can bounce back from a poor run in the July Cup.
He scooted to a stunning victory in the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock before going on to Ascot and a return to the Lancashire track should see him sparkle once again on the biggest stage. Elite Status and Swingalong are two very smart sprinters lining up here, but if Inisherin can produce his best then he can land the prize with aplomb.
