1:30pm Ascot – Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% Handicap

Richard Hannon’s GREAT BEDWYN shaped with real promise when scooting to a one-and-a-half length victory at Goodwood last June, but the four-year-old son of Showcasing wasn’t seen on the track again and will make his hotly-anticipated return to the track in a hugely competitive opening contest at Ascot at 1:30pm.

Given a 5lbs rise by the handicapper for that win, Great Bedwyn lines up off a mark of 82 here and he looks like he could have the potential to be better than that. He stayed on strongly that day at Goodwood over a mile-and-a-half and over the same sort of trip on Saturday he can produce all his best work in the closing stages and kick-start his progression again.

2:05pm Ascot – Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% British EBF Fillies’ Handicap

A shock 22/1 winner of the Listed Coral Distaff at Sandown last season, MYSTIC PEARL was then sent into Group company on her next few outings, but failed to land any sort of blow for William Haggas. Dropping back into the handicap sphere on Saturday she has to be a leading contender off top weight in a trappy betting heat for punters.

That Sandown win came over a mile and that’s the distance she lines up over this weekend and with a tongue strap applied for the first time she could just be the class act of the field. Available at double-figured odds at the time of writing, the four-year-old should improve for a spin on the all-weather at Kempton last month and she can bounce back to winning ways here.

2:40pm Ascot – Lavazza & Ascot 10 Year Anniversary Victoria Cup

One of the toughest handicaps of the season takes place at 2:40pm as the Victoria Cup attracts a bumper field in what is a cracking 7f contest. The Charlie Fellowes-trained THE WIZARD OF EYE is the one that catches the eye as he’s been slipping down the handicap ratings in recent months and off 99 he has to be in the vicinity.

A Listed winner back in 2022, he failed to fire on his last start at the back end of last season, but the ground could have been too soft that day, so a return to a sounder surface this weekend should bring on some improvement. He’s since switched to the yard of Fellowes and having been gelded he’s on the comeback trail, but this son of Galileo Gold looks tailor-made for this sort of race and he has to be regarded as a leading player.

3:00pm Lingfield Park – William Hill Lingfield Derby Trial Stakes

Aidan O’Brien may not saddle his leading Derby contenders in the Lingfield Derby Trial, but with six wins in the race during his career the Ballydoyle supremo can often find one good enough to claim the prize and it falls on the shoulders of ILLINOIS in the 2024 renewal, which takes place at 3:00pm at Lingfield Park on Saturday.

The Galileo colt suffered a shock defeat when sent off an odds-on favourite for the Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown last month, but that was in heavy ground, so he may find Saturday’s task easier on quicker ground. Third in a Group 1 event in France last season as a juvenile, Illinois is one that has a Derby entry and he looks a solid bet in a race that could lack a bit of strength in depth.
