It’s Paddy Power Gold Cup day at Cheltenham on Saturday and the feature race will light up the ITV coverage at 2:20pm, as there’s six races on terrestrial television. Our in-house tipster Steve Chambers focuses his attentions on the action at Prestbury Park and picks out his Cheltenham best bets for Saturday 16th November here.
2:20pm Cheltenham – Paddy Power Gold Cup Handicap Chase
Runner-up in the Turners Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, Ginny’s Destiny is a warm order to go one better in a hugely competitive renewal of the Paddy Power Gold Cup at 2:20pm. However, the Paul Nicholls-trained raider will need a career best to land the prize and it could be the top-weighted PROTEKTORAT that can lead his rivals a merry dance and claim victory in this event.
A fine winner of the Grade 1 Ryanair Chase back in March, Dan Skelton’s nine-year-old is the proven class act in the race and if he is firing on all cylinders then he could simply outclass his rivals. He has to give tonnes of weight away to all his rivals, but he’s a proven top notch performer over this intermediate trip and while a repeat Ryanair win is sure to be on the cards in the spring this could be an ideal prep for that and he can storm to a fine weight-carrying win here.

Thu 14 Nov 20242:55pm Cheltenham – From The Horses Mouth Podcast Handicap Hurdle
Beaten by the very impressive The Wallpark at Cheltenham last month, GOWEL ROAD has been given a 2lb rise for that second placed run, but the Nigel Twiston-Davies-trained contender is more than capable of going one better in Saturday’s 2:55pm contest. Sixth in the Pertemps Final, the eight-year-old has impressive form around Prestbury Park and looks capable of defying top weight in this event.
He pulled over four lengths clear of his rivals in that October race at Cheltenham, so it’s excellent form and the 3m trip will certainly bring out the best of him on quickish ground. Dan Skelton’s Doyen Quest is arguably more attractively handicapped, but is pretty short in the betting and it’s the Twiston-Davies charge that can land success.
3:30pm Cheltenham – Paddy Power Intermediate Handicap Hurdle
We have another trappy betting heat for punters at 3:30pm and Tony Martin’s Irish raider Hamsiyann is a fascinating contender at the head of the betting, as the four-year-old looks to make the most of a light weight. However, the home brigade can take the prize and in particular FIRE FLYER, who makes his hotly-anticipated return for Paul Nicholls.
The six-year-old disappointed at the latter stages of last season with two poor runs at Sandown, but he had previously shown notable signs of being a decent handicapper when winning at Wincanton and Taunton. He’s had wind surgery since, which could bring on some improvement, and with the Ditcheat yard appearing to have turned a corner after a slow start then Fire Flyer can land this prize.
