1:35pm Newcastle – JenningsBet 200 Shops Nationwide Handicap

It’s been over two years since Andrew Balding’s KING’S LYNN got his head in front, but the former Group 2 Temple Stakes winner continues to plummet in the handicap and he has to be given a notable shout in the 1:35pm at Newcastle off a mark of 92. Rated in the low 110s in his prime, the former Wokingham third has struggled to reach those heights in recent times, but showed glimpses last time out when fourth at Hamilton.

Dropped a further 2lbs by the handicapper, the eight-year-old may just be on a gradual incline and may have his better days behind him, but if he can build on that decent run at Hamilton then he has to be given the utmost respect in a competitive opening contest on terrestrial television.

3:10pm Newcastle – JenningsBet Northumberland Plate Handicap

A bumper field will line up for the Northumberland Plate at 3:10pm and it could be Sir Mark Prescott that wins the staying showpiece for the first time in his career. All eyes will be on Trooper Bisdee at the head of the market and that contender looks a major player, but it’s the stable’s other runner TRUE LEGEND that looks one that could run a huge race at decent odds.

The four-year-old son of Camelot has been performing with huge credit of late and has racked up a brace of second placed finishes, but he can go one better on Saturday. He is one that will relish the step up to 2m for this contest as he’s been staying on eye-catchingly well over 1m 4f and 1m 6f at Lingfield and Goodwood. He has been given a 3lbs rise for his recent second, but a mark of 92 looks workable and he looks tailor-made for this sort of race.

3:25pm Newmarket – Plantation Stud Criterion Stakes

A fine 80/1 winner of the Buckingham Palace Handicap at Royal Ascot last year, Richard Hannon’s WITCH HUNTER then landed the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes to show vast improvement at this time of year. Handed the unenviable task of trying to win the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at the Royal meeting last week, the five-year-old ran a mighty race to finish a fine fourth.

Dropping back to seven furlongs for Saturday’s Criterion Stakes at Newmarket, Witch Hunter is sure to be travelling smoothly through the early stages of the race before he unleashes his trademark late surge. The likes of Noble Dynasty, Pogo and Nostrum will be big players, but they all have their own frailties, so it could be worth taking a chance on Witch Hunter landing the prize.

3:40pm Newcastle – Pertemps Network Handicap

We end with a hugely competitive 7f 14y contest at Newcastle and the likes of United Approach and Local Hero deserve to be at the head of the market, but it could be worth looking elsewhere for some decent each-way value. One that could be worth taking a chance on is George Boughey’s RAADOBARG, who continues to plummet in the handicap.

Making his Tapeta debut on Saturday, the six-year-old has been on a long losing run and was way down the field in the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot last week, but this is much easier. Dropped 2lbs by the handicapper to a mark of 101, he’s now 8lbs lower than his highest mark, so he could be one that sparkles here at big odds.
