It’s day one of Newmarket’s Guineas Festival on Friday 2nd May and there’s some quality action at Flat HQ, which will be live in front of the ITV Racing cameras. Goodwood also host some competitive racing on the south coast and there are three races taking place on terrestrial television. Our in-house tipster Steve Chambers previews the action and picks out his best bets here…
2:35pm Goodwood – Racehorse Ownership From 25 At racingclub.com Handicap
A narrow winner over course and distance back in late July, TATTERSTALL failed to follow up next time out when lining up at Southwell in the Racing League, but a return to the turf on Friday in the 2:35pm at Goodwood could see the Michael Dods-trained runner return to winning ways in what is a hugely competitive betting heat.
He’s 6lbs higher than that win last season, so a mark of 93 is surely going to test him, but he’s likely to be sent to the front from the start of the contest and will look to emulate his win at Goodwood last time out he visited the track by making all. Shagraan and Toca Madera are two rivals that will certainly pressurise him in the closing stages, but the speedy five-year-old can cling on for victory.

2:55pm Newmarket – Betfred ‘The Classic Bookmaker’ Handicap
Plenty line up in this three-year-old 1m contest with potential and the likes of Spectacular View, Brave Mission and Dante’s Lad all look to have a decent season ahead of them, but the one to side with is Richard Hannon’s BEST RATE, who will be ridden by Ryan Moore and looks to have a great chance of landing this prize at 2:55pm at Newmarket.
Four starts on the all-weather has seen him run up to a decent level and some of those outings have been in races that has seen plenty of winners emerge from them. Last seen finishing third at Kempton back in March, Hannon’s charge will make his turf debut in this event and he looks like that one could improve for the switch to the grass. He should strip fitter for that last run and off 83 here he could be attractively weighted to land the money.
3:10pm Goodwood – British Stallion Studs EBF Daisy Warwick Fillies’ Stakes
Hugely consistent last season, Ed Walker’s SCENIC can kick off her campaign with a Listed victory in the 3:10pm at Goodwood. She showed she was a real class act when storming to a three-and-three-quarter length success in the Listed Galtres Stakes at York back in August, while she wasn’t disgraced when fourth in the Group 2 Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster in September.
That win at York came on good to firm ground and she’s likely to get similar conditions at Goodwood on Friday afternoon and she could well prove to be a lot better than her rivals in this contest. With potential bigger fish to fry in Group company later this season, Walker’s five-year-old mare can claim this contest in style and land the prize for favourite backers.
