2:00pm Sandown – Virgin Bet Every Saturday Money Back Handicap Chase

Hugely impressive when racking up a five-timer over fences between March 2024 and November of the same year, MARTATOR has just struggled in recent times to continue his winning ways, but the Venetia Williams-trained eight-year-old can return to the winner’s enclosure on Saturday in the 2:00pm at Sandown.

Third at Kempton Park in the Grade 2 Desert Orchid Chase, where he was outclassed by Sir Gino, he ventured into calmer waters last time out at Ascot, but could only finish seventh in a hot race. Now, dropped 1lb by the handicapper, he’s rated 150, so will take on a bunch of inferior rivals in this weekend’s event and he can bag the victory. He has shown a real liking for Sandown, so should be able to dominate despite having the burden of top weight.

2:17pm Musselburgh – bet365 Scottish County Handicap Hurdle

Fifth in the Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham earlier in the season, FLORIDA DREAMS then followed that up with another fifth placed finish in a competitive Aintree contest on Boxing Day. Now, the Nicky Richards-trained raider will look to get back to winning ways in what looks an extremely trappy renewal of the Scottish County Handicap Hurdle at Musselburgh at 2:17pm. He remains on a mark of 126 for this event, but it’s the drop back to two miles that could prove to be the defining factor as all four of his wins have come over that trip. He failed to see out the 2m 4f at Aintree last time out, so the drop back to the minimum distance here can be the key.

3:07pm Sandown – Virgin Bet Heroes Handicap Hurdle

Dan Skelton’s MAJOR FORTUNE kicked off his season with a taking victory at Newton Abbot, but then failed to land a blow at Cheltenham or Chepstow in hot handicap hurdles. The Cheltenham race was certainly a strong heat with the second Long Draw and fourth Wyenot going on to bigger and better things this season. He’s been dropped 2lbs by the handicapper, which is a huge positive, and while the likes of Shoot First and Henri The Second look notable rivals it’s the Skelton charge that can storm to victory here.

3:42pm Sandown – Virgin Bet Masters Handicap Chase

It’s a pretty mediocre renewal of this contest, which concludes the live terrestrial action and all eyes will be on In D’Or to see if he can land a hat-trick of wins and he’s entitled to be at the head of the betting having won at Ascot in mid-January. The one to take him on with his Anthony Honeyball’s GUSTAVIAN, who was just touched off at Aintree on Boxing Day and put in one of his best performances in for a while. He’s been given a notable 4lbs rise for that run, but having been a winner off 132 earlier in his career then Saturday’s mark of 126 is well within his capabilities and he’s the tentative selection in a trappy event.
