Race 1 – 1.50pm Cheltenham – Betfair Exchange Handicap Chase

There are some classy horses in this race, but IMPERIAL SAINT is improving quickly and might be the answer to the ITV7 opener. The seven-year-old point winner has won three of his four chase starts, all of which have come at Aintree, but the most recent two of those have been by comfortable margins. He was disappointing in between at Newbury, so there is a slight concern about his adaptability for tracks outside of Liverpool, but his overall profile is progressive, he gets the trip, and there may well be more to come.

Race 2 – 2.05pm Doncaster – Pertemps Network River Don Novices’ Hurdle (Grade 2)

Ben Pauling has won three runnings of this novice Grade 2 since 2016, while The Jukebox Man was second for him in the Albert Bartlett at the 2024 Cheltenham Festival. Therefore, with his solid record in this division, JIG’S FORGE could well prove the answer. His point-to-point winning form is strong, as is his maiden hurdle success at Ffos Las, from which the runner-up and fourth have won since, the former by 26 lengths. Those point efforts also suggest he will stay this trip even early in his career.

Race 3 – 2.25pm Cheltenham – Betfair Cotswold Chase (Grade 2)

Preference is for L’HOMME PRESSE, who rarely lets his connections down and could easily have reached even higher levels of form but for some enforced injury absences through his career. The 6lb he receives from Gentlemansgame could be crucial here and a repeat of either his Gold Cup fourth or King George third should be enough, while there is reason to believe he will improve on the latter.

Race 4 – 2.40pm Doncaster – Virgin Bet Yorkshire Rose Mares’ Hurdle (Grade 2)

Cheekpieces go on JETARA after a couple of below par efforts from Jessica Harrington’s mare this season. However, her peak form is the strongest in this line-up and the addition of headgear coupled with the step up in trip to 3m could bring about the requisite return to her best, which saw her twice finish in the frame in novice Grade 1s last season.

Race 5 – 3.00pm Cheltenham – Unibet Hurdle (Grade 2)

Even a reduced version of CONSTITUTION HILL will beat his quartet of rivals here with disdain. His two runs at Cheltenham have been his best, he returned in good form at Kempton in the Christmas Hurdle, and these will be ideal conditions for him to warm up for a Champion Hurdle tilt. The jackpot for the ITV7 will double to £100,000 if he wins.

Race 6 – 3.15pm Doncaster – Virgin Bet Great Yorkshire Handicap Chase

This looks competitive and so a more speculative suggestion is YOUNG BUSTER for Fergal O’Brien. The nine-year-old had won on his first three chase starts and looked to be making it four out of four in a novice handicap over course and distance last season when blundering at the third last and ultimately fading late on. He is 2lb lower in the handicap now having also been in front at the last at Aintree in May, while the 91-day gap between his last race (didn’t stay over 3m2f at Kelso) is no worry given he has twice won after gaps of more than 100 days.

Race 7 – 3.35pm Cheltenham – Betfair Cleeve Hurdle (Grade 2)

The curse of seconditis can be broken for GOWEL ROAD, who can land a belated victory. He has run four times at Cheltenham this season, finishing as the runner-up each time, but two of those were when carrying 12st in handicap company, while he was beaten under a length in a 2m4f Grade 2 here on New Year’s Day. The 6lb the selection receives from the principals could be key here, with both Crambo and Strong Leader having questions to answer about their suitability for Cheltenham.
