Race 1 – 2.00pm Sandown – Virgin Bet Every Saturday Money Back Handicap Chase

Not many of these are particularly solid and it might be worth siding with SOLO, who is sliding down the weights and is now on a particularly tempting mark. His only handicap win came in ready fashion at this venue in November 2022, but while he is still 7lb higher than that victory, he has run some respectable races off much higher marks than 142 in the recent past too. He handles soft ground, has been given 3lb by the handicapper for a respectable effort last time and faces rivals who are either out-of-form or weighted to the hilt.

Race 2 – 2.17pm Musselburgh- bet365 Scottish County Handicap Hurdle

Though disappointing when attempting to follow up under a penalty, MAGHLAAK was running just five days after a victory when third at Ayr last time out. However, this useful flat performer had looked thoroughly progressive on his first two handicap starts, winning by 14 lengths under 10lb claimer James Robottom on the second of those in a performance which suggests he can win again. Trainer Adrian Paul Keatley is firing at an impressive 23% strike rate this National Hunt season too.

Race 3 – 2.35pm Sandown – Virgin Bet Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase (Grade 1)

There are only four runners here, but this is tricky with even outsider Mark Of Gold having won a Grade 2 on his chase debut, albeit a weak one. However, JANGO BAIE ultimately won very impressively on his debut and the runner-up has bolted in since. He would have won regardless of the 8lb he was in receipt of anyway and though he was defeated by Handstands over hurdles, he was the one under a penalty that day and can overturn that form off level weights having generally looked a natural over fences on his debut.

Race 4 – 2.50pm Musselburgh – bet365 Scottish Champion Chase

The Kalooki Kid is a promising type who may back up his victory at Doncaster, but MARBLE SANDS was a winner as a novice handicapper on this card last season and could easily score here again. He is just 2lb higher in the handicap since then having also won a Listed chase at Carlisle in the meantime, while he had no chance with a handicap blot winner at Cheltenham on New Year’s Day. The grey is perfectly capable of winning off this rating and 3lb claimer Nick Slatter is proving value for that allowance.

Race 5 – 3.07pm Sandown – Virgin Bet Heroes Handicap Hurdle

The form of Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden is a slight concern, but HENRI THE SECOND should still be ahead of the handicapper based on his win over course and distance on Tingle Creek Day. The eight-year-old had been upped to a trip just shy of 3m for the first time when scorching clear for an 18-length victory under Freddie Gingell’s 3lb claim and an 8lb rise (11lb without Gingell’s claim) looks defiable. Underfoot conditions are very similar to when he won emphatically last time out.

Race 6 – 3.30pm Leopardstown – Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup Chase (Grade 1)

Though he was marginally below his best in this race a year ago, GALOPIN DES CHAMPS was still a cosy winner from Fastorslow and is unbeaten at Leopardstown over fences. He will likely be even fitter at Cheltenham, but can rack up a hat-trick in this event en route at the chief expense of stablemate Fact To File.

Race 7 – 3.42pm Sandown – Virgin Bet Masters Handicap Chase

In d’Or’s improvement may not have finished yet after an 8lb rise for his recent Ascot success, but a chance is given to the veteran SHAN BLUE, whose mark is now difficult to ignore. Connections suggested he was unsuited by Cheltenham when down the field in a veterans’ race in December and there is plenty of evidence to back that up. The handicapper dropped him 4lb nevertheless, while he was third in a Grade 3 handicap at Ascot fewer than 12 months ago off 6lb higher and this race looks notably weaker. As long as his tendency to jump left does not hinder him too much, this flatter track can play to his strengths and a twilight victory could be imminent.
