CALDWELL POTTER

(Harry Cobden/Paul Nicholls)

A Grade 1-winning novice hurdler whilst under the stewardship of Gordon Elliott, Caldwell Potter made a winning chasing debut for Paul Nicholls when winning at Carlisle in early December. Sent to Cheltenham next time out, the Ditcheat inmate was no match for Jango Baie and Springwell Bay over 2m 4f. That form has been franked with the latter winning impressively, so Caldwell Potter’s third that day doesn’t seem too bad. He will enjoy the drop back to two miles for this contest and he is certainly the one to beat.

GIDLEIGH PARK

(Bryan Carver/Harry Fry)

Another with Graded winning form over hurdles is Gidleigh Park, who won a Grade 2 at Cheltenham last season before finishing a creditable sixth in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival. Well fancied for his chasing debut at Newbury last month, Harry Fry’s charge was pulled up in the early stages of that contest and showed a few jumping frailties. There’s undoubtedly a classy performance in him, but the way he jumped left no confidence and over a trip of two miles he should be tapped for toe here.

YOU WEAR IT WELL

(Gavin Sheehan/Jamie Snowden)

A surprise winner of the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle back at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival, You Wear It Well has struggled to live up to the dizzy heights of that Grade 2 success in recent seasons and Jamie Snowden will be hoping his star mare can show some quality here. Second on chasing debut at Bangor, she was then given plenty to do at Warwick last time out when finishing third. If she can stay on the pace a bit better here then she has the potential to cause an upset, but she’s another with question marks hanging over her.

PERSONAL AMBITION

(Ben Jones/Ben Pauling)

Ben Pauling’s Personal Ambition has the most experience of this field over fences having competed over the larger obstacles on three occasions. Yet to taste victory, he was last seen finishing second in the Grade 2 Noel Novices’ Chase at Ascot and he will need to improve on that effort. He has a decent level of form over fences, but he lacks the Graded class of his rivals here, but he should be able to grab a top three spot due to his consistency.

VERDICT

CALDWELL POTTER cost a hefty sum, but can repay his owners on Friday by outclassing his rivals in the Lightning Novices’ Chase. The drop back two two miles should be a real positive and he can get the better of You Wear It Well, who can chase him home, while Personal Ambition can get the better of Gidleigh Park to grab third spot.
