2:35 Market Rasen – Unibet Veterans’ Handicap Chase (2024 Veterans’ Chase Series Final) (Class 2) (9yo+) – Empire Steel 7/1 2pt WIN

It’s pleasing to see the Veterans’ Chase Series Final rescheduled, as I’m still just as confident in the chances of EMPIRE STEEL, but perhaps even more so now around Market Rasen. The ten-year-old grey’s best form has all come around Kelso, with his form figures reading 112131, so I’d imagine the sharp, undulating nature of Market Rasen will play into his strengths. I’m not too concerned about him running right handed as he’s only ran around that way three times, once in his P2P, a win at Carlisle on rules debut, and at Sandown.

As noted, in the last write off prior to it being called off, The Aizavoski gelding made his seasonal debut in a 0-150 Veterans’ Chase at Haydock last month, shaping as if needing the outing when beaten ten lengths off top weight. That was a promising return as he kept on having initially weakened, and second backed the form up when beaten a length in the Rowland Meyrick next time out.

Sandy Thomson won this in 2021 with Seeyouatmidnight under Ryan Mania, who also made his seasonal debut in that same contest at Haydock as Empire Steel did last month.

3:35 Windsor – Fitzdares Sovereign Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race) (Class 2) (4yo+) – Secret Squirrel 15/2 1pt WIN

SECRET SQUIRREL was booked for third prior to taking a tired fall at the last behind Kabral Du Mathan and Fiercely Proud in a similar contest at Ascot last time out, with the front pair finishing seventeen lengths ahead of the third and going up 9lbs and 8lbs respectively. Despite posting a career best RPR of 130, he was left alone on a mark of 126 and can take advantage of that this time.

David Bass set some typically strong fractions up front alongside Our Champ, who was readily swept aside two out with Secret Squirrel travelling well, but he inevitably set the race up for the two sitting off the pace, and it was perhaps no surprise to see his jumping somewhat fall apart late on.

He fared best of the closers in the Lavazza Handicap at Ascot in November when a three length third at 7/2, and I’d imagine with a decent pace forecast here he’ll be ridden with a touch more restraint. Interestingly, Nico De Boinville takes the ride this time around with David Bass presumably not able to make 10-6, but Morrison is 11-4-1 (£15.38+) all time when teaming up with Nico, and this progressive son of Stimulation can fare well off second bottom weight if he’s none the worse for that fall last time out.
