TROOPER BISDEE

(Hollie Doyle/Sir Mark Prescott)

Fresh from a Royal Ascot win, Sir Mark Prescott is bidding for a first Northumberland Plate crown and he will unleash a leading contender in the shape of Trooper Bisdee, who will be the mount of Hollie Doyle. Impressive wins at Nottingham and Pontefract mean the four-year-old son of Australia heads to the north east in the form of his life and on the back of a four-length win last time out. He will have a 5lbs penalty to contend with here, but he looks to still be ahead of the handicapper and with stamina proven is the one to beat.

ZOFFEE

(Harry Davies/Hugo Palmer)

Hugo Palmer’s Zoffee finally got his moment in the spotlight last month when he stormed home to claim glory in the Chester Cup at the ripe old age of eight. The hugely consistent stayer has been a regular in big field staying handicaps, but he finally managed to land the coveted prize on the Roodee and he will go for a momentous staying double on Saturday. Given a 4lbs rise for that win, he will need to improve on that effort and this could be a tougher contest with some more improvers in, so he will have his work cut out to land the prize.

DUKE OF OXFORD

(Tyler Heard/Michael Bell)

Second over course and distance back in March, Duke Of Oxford will line up off the same mark of 90 this weekend and is looking to hand Michael Bell and Tyler Heard victory in the race. He was way down the field in the Chester Cup last time out, but having been drawn in stall 16 that day he was sure to face a huge uphill task to land that prize. Entitled to be well fancied for this event, Bell’s raider may enjoy the return to Newcastle and is no forlorn hope.

GRAND PROVIDENCE

(David Probert/Andrew Balding)

Another contender that was seen competing in the Chester Cup last month, Andrew Balding’s Grand Providence was a creditable fifth that day and the classy filly is well fancied to go close here. A former winner of a Cesarewitch Trial at Newmarket over 2m 2f, the four-year-old has shown she can deliver the goods over extreme distances and she is certainly one that will be doing all her best work in the closing stages of this event.

THE FIELD

Plenty line up with notable chances in what is a hugely competitive renewal of the 2024 Northumberland Plate and while Trooper Bisdee is the obvious first choice for Sir Mark Prescott he will also have True Legend, who is a player as well. Second in three of his last four outings, the Camelot colt steps up in trip to 2m for the first time and it’s the marathon trip that could bring on some improvement.

A former winner of the November Handicap at the track, Brian Ellison’s Onesmoothoperator is bidding for another big pot here, while Alan King’s Spartan Army was only a head behind Duke Of Oxford in their last clash at Newcastle, so is another worthy of taking his chance in this event. Ellison will also saddle the top-weighted Tashkhan, who is the proven class horse of the race, and is a contender last seen finishing third in Group 1 company, so has to be respected, while the likes of Forza Orta and Yashin add more depth to the race.

VERDICT

Sir Mark Prescott has a strong team heading to Newcastle and Trooper Bisdee looks to have everything going for him, but it’s another runner from that yard that appeals in the shape of TRUE LEGEND, who is one that will relish the step up to 2m. He’s been finishing well over 1m 4f and 1m 6f, so the extra distance should bring about more improvement and he can land the prize from his stablemate with Grand Providence back in third.
