Royal Ascot Day 1 Tips – Daryl Carter’s Tuesday Treats

Daryl Carter

Daryl Carter is buzzing ahead of day of Royal Ascot and here’s his top horse racing tips for the big meeting on Tuesday

*MOHAATHER (1.50 Ascot, 0.5pts each-way 9/1)

With Bless Him a non-runner, we’ll chance our arm with MOHAATHER, who improved with every single start last season and caught the eye after a long break when showing up well in the Group 1 QEII over course and distance.

That was a return from injury and on heavy ground but he managed a good fifth despite being denied a clear run in the closing stages. That form rates one of the strongest on offer in this contest and it would be folly to think there is not more to come from the powerful Marcus Tregoning-trained colt.

He is back under suitable conditions today and drawn next to our other selection Fox Chairman, and the likely pace angle Marie’s Diamond which should give him a good tow into the race..

FOX CHAIRMAN (1.50 Ascot, 1.5pts each-way 8/1)

The other tip in the race is FOX CHAIRMAN. I have been a big fan of his for a long time and he was unlucky not to win the Hampton Court last season at Royal Ascot. He is taken to make amends for that and pick up the progressive thread again this season.

He has been kept fresh by design and I felt he had the beating of today’s favourite last season at Chester. He is a winner over Newbury’s straight mile so the track should pose no issue and the drop back in trip is a good move by connections.

MOHICAN HEIGHTS (3.00 Ascot, 1pt win 9/2)

MOHICAN HEIGHTS will benefit from this step up in trip on just his third start and confidence can be taken that the trainer throws him into Group Company so early in his career.

David Simcock has won this race previously so he is likely to know what it takes and he offers value against a favourite who is not guaranteed to stay this trip. He has shaped on both occasions that this step up in trip is needed and it’s to his credit he was able to win over 7f in Ireland and 1m at Salisbury. He rates a solid option to take on the hype horse at the head of the market.

TIS MARVELOUS (3.35 Ascot, 0.5pts each-way 33/1)

This will take a leap of faith but TIS MARVELOUS record at Ascot on good going or better over 5f reads 11 and his performance here in the heritage handicap last July would have been enough to put him in the frame in the 2018 King’s Stand.

Given he hasn’t had the opportunity to replicate the form under those conditions, he is worth chancing at a huge each-way price here. The strong finisher has had only eight runs over 5f and could have more to offer.

The favourite is not the strongest of finishers here at Ascot and Tis Marvelous doesn’t have too much to find with the remainder of the field on figures. There is every chance that he can fill the frame should the favourite be on a going day.

BLUE LAUREATE (4.40 Ascot, 0.5pts each-way 14/1)

BLUE LAUREATE ran with credit for this column last week and this extra distance will certainly be in his favour. Cieren Fallon is back on board and gets on well with the horse, with his valuable 3lb claim worth its weight ingGold.

He has a 2-length deficit to turn around with Land Of Oz on their last meeting but is 12lb better off at the weights with that rival. Ian Williams is a master at these long distance races winning this last year with The Grand Visir and has prepped the selection very similarly to that one.
