Top tipster Sam Turner is a regular on Racing TV and a proponent of speed figures and sectional timing. Here are his best bets for the day’s action
There looked plenty more in the tank last month when he landed a modest five-runner affair, but the time stood up well and he could trouble the likely favourite.
Mabs Cross (York, 3.35) has been the subject of a late jockey change with Gerald Mosse taking over from regular pilot Paul Mulrennan, but the Frenchman was on board when the filly landed the Abbaye last autumn and he may enjoy further Group 1 success today.
The presence of July Cup winner Ten Sovereigns and Battaash provide stiff competition for the selection who found the latter too strong at Haydock before running creditably behind her old adversary at Ascot in the King’s Stand Stakes.
However, Battaash has historically struggled at this venue and Ten Sovereigns may well prove a tougher nut to crack even if he must cope with a drop back to 5f. He has never looked short of speed and could well take some pegging back from stall 11, but Mabs Cross looks a fair each-way wager against the two main protagonists.
Ralph Beckett’s galloper posted an incredible time for the grade when obliging here over 12 furlongs last week and looks as though today’s step up in trip could induce even further improvement.
Spartan Fighter (York, 3.00) 1pt ew
Mabs Cross (York, 3.35) 1pt ew
Tigerskin (Ffos Las, 5.05) 2pt win
