Torcello (Windsor, 3.40)

Torcello had looked a horse going places when progressing rapidly in 2017 but it didn’t work out in the Old Rowley Cup at Newmarket that October and he ended up in Ireland to start a hurdling career.

Unfortunately, despite winning a Tramore maiden hurdle he struggled - even back on the level - and returned to the UK in May. However, after four uninspiring performances he has suddenly found his feet and is on a hat-trick today. An unexpected winner at Newbury in mid-August, Torcello proved the run to be no fluke as he swerved the Cambridgeshire, headed to Epsom eight days ago and surged to an imperious victory in the mud from 3lb out of the handicap.

The selection has his conditions again today, is racing off just 2lb higher despite the penalty and, as a previous winner over a similar trip, should take all the beating whilst in this mood.

Spygate (Pontefract, 2.30)

It will be tough going for the juveniles at Pontefract but Spygate showed an affinity for heavy ground and an uphill finish at Hamilton last Monday when just out-pointed by a well backed stable companion.

Not helped by being out of the handicap and carrying overweight, he nonetheless dug in deep and only just failed to reel in the winner who had finished a long way in front of him in a very valuable race at York in August.

Spygate is taken to lead home another stablemate Three Coins who is also proven on rain-softened going but is returning from a 52-day break.
