The Irish turf Flat season gets under way and Sam Turner has two horses expected to have a decent campaign, starting today.
Kiss For A Jewel (Naas, 4.30)
Trying to weigh up which stables and horses are ready to roll on day one of the new Irish turf season is a tricky task, however KISS FOR A JEWEL was beaten a neck over course and distance on her comeback 12 months ago so I am optimistic she will be straight enough to do herself justice here.
The Kingman filly improved from the beginning of August last term when the cheekpieces were applied, winning a Tipperary maiden before comfortably lifting a Fairyhouse handicap in the autumn. Connections were keen to try and procure some black type at Naas in October, but the selection didn't appreciate the step up to 12 furlongs on deep ground and failed to give her running.
Although she is wrong at the weights with a number of her rivals today, Kiss For A Jewel tackles this Group 3 even though she holds an entry in the Irish Lincolnshire next Sunday which suggests connections aren't too concerned about preserving her handicap mark.
Emiyn (Naas, 5.00)
EMIYN is likely to appreciate further in time given he is from the same family as Enzeli and Estimate, but he looks like he should boast enough speed to win this maiden before going on to better things.
Entered in both the Irish Guineas and Irish Derby - should they be allowed to take place - the son of Invincible Spirit faded late on in the maiden won by Nobel Prize at the tail-end of the last campaign, looking as though his fitness reserves had been emptied on deep ground.
There is a chance he may well need today's outing, but his relatives all seem to strengthen and get better with age and he is clearly held in some regard given his intended targets later this summer.
Sam Turner's Best Bets
