Sir Mark Prescott has witnessed a success of well-handicapped and well-fancied stayers find the £350,000 Cesarewitch beyond them, but Timoshenko (Newmarket, 4.10) and Land Of Oz must surely go close for the Heath House handler today.

The latter, a cosy winner of the Cesarewitch Trial at HQ three weeks ago, is arguably the more eye-catching given he sits at the foot of the weights thanks to Prescott’s typically shrewd decision not to declare stablemate Distant Chimes, allowing the three-year-old to make the final field.

Timoshenko’s participation was never really in doubt given this race picked itself once he had made a workmanlike winning comeback at Goodwood in July.

Much like Land Of Oz, the selection possesses a rather languid and lazy racing style which suggests there is plenty of untapped potential remaining and there doesn’t appear a trip long enough for him.

His snug Goodwood victory again demonstrated he is a horse best kept fresh so the 73-day absence is a plus, especially given the expertise of his handler and the ground was arguably easier than the going description at Goodwood so today’s conditions should be no issue.

It goes without saying that a valuable staying handicap on the flat will attract Willie Mullins who sent out the 1-2 12 months ago and saddles a powerful triumvirate this time round.

The chances of Buildmeupbuttercup haven’t been lost on the layers, but it would seem unwise to discount the claims of Great White Shark who will relish the attritional nature of this event and is therefore worth a saver.

Pinatubo has looked utterly imperious on his last two starts at Goodwood and the Curragh, winning by five and nine lengths respectively, quite rightly developing into the most talented and exciting juvenile seen since Frankel and arguably some time before.

The first of those displays saw him leave Positive (Newmarket, 3.30) in his wake, but the runner-up has since gamely scored at Sandown and could narrow the gap today.

He is worth a look both as an each-way project and in the markets without Pinatubo as a value play against the favourite.

Lampang (York, 2.40) looked a class act when running away with a Ripon event on his latest start and, although today’s draw is a little awkward, he should be able to overcome racing on the wing.

There was plenty to admire in his wide-margin success last time and it will be disappointing if he doesn’t repay his trainer’s faith in his ability.
