Top tipster Sam Turner is a regular on Racing TV and a proponent of speed figures and sectional timing. Here are his best bets for the weekend’s action
Conditions are sure to ride extremely testing on the straight track and stamina, even at this sprint trip, is likely to be at a premium. That scenario could play to the strengths of One Master who arrives in good form courtesy of her victory in the Foret on Arc weekend.
The William Haggas-trained filly posted a career-best effort in the Group 1 Queen Anne at today’s venue back at the Royal meeting in June where the combination of the trip and a modest draw saw her narrowly fail to overhaul Lord Glitters having looked the winner at the furlong marker.
She appears to have plenty of pace to track with the likes of Hello Youmzain and Donjuan Triumphant in close proximity. The latter looks overpriced given he was third last year and loves deep ground and it's worth noting he is 2-2 in fields of this size (17-20) and 5-14 between the months of September and November.
A saver at a big price looks a prudent measure with some firms offering four places.
British racegoers may remember The Revenant from his early days with Hugo Palmer but he has taken his career to a new level since, with the prospect of attritional conditions no concern at all for connections. He could well prove himself a class act, but Lord Glitters (Ascot, 3.20) has already managed that courtesy of his success in the Queen Anne in June and his track stats read an impressive 212261.
A decent gallop on the straight mile with cut in the ground really plays to his strengths and, although he was beaten 2¾l in this event 12 months ago, that run was just a month after a punishing trip to Canada and connections have not made the same mistake again.
Century Dream, in front at the furlong marker last year when a big price, could make a bold bid once more at tidy odds. It is highly unlikely connections have arrived at this race by accident given his form on a straight track with plenty of give in the ground and I'll be taking a small chance on him too at 20-1 or bigger with four places on offer.
Kynren landed a nice touch for this column a fortnight ago when backed from 9-1 into 11-4 and I can't resist going to the well again with him seemingly unfancied by the market.
The ante-post market has only wanted to know one horse, Lord North, who landed a sizeable punt in the Cambridgeshire and is clearly a pattern-race performer in waiting. However, these conditions will be as attritional as he has encountered whereas Kynren should revel in the ground and is therefore the medium of a modest each-way wager. His figures with Ben Curtis aboard now read 113201.
