It is a shame that the turnout for this race is so poor but it’s a fascinating contest nonetheless and one that SECRET REPRIEVE can land.
The five-year-old was a shock winner of a heavy-ground novices’ hurdle 11 months ago, scoring with plenty in hand after the warm favourite struggled in the mud late on. Unable to replicate that in just two outings since, he did run with some promise on his chasing bow 22 days ago after a seven and a half-month break. Last of the finishers, Secret Reprieve travelled well for most of the race before hitting a flat spot and then running on again.
He steps up to three miles on Sunday and I am hopeful we will see a different horse.
The selection made all, scooted clear two out and may have won by more than six lengths but for a last-fence mistake. In the end, it was still very easy and the big field was well strung out.
Not so good since including in last season’s Imperial Cup over course and distance, Totterdown is back in action after a long break but scored with ease first time out last year and now hails from a yard in hot form of late.
TODAY’S BEST BETS
SECRET REPRIEVE (Ffos Las, 2.00) 2pt win
