Top tipster Sam Turner is a regular on Racing TV and a proponent of speed figures and sectional timing. Here are his best bets for the day’s action
Although ultimately well beaten in the Goodwood Mile by the likes of Vale Of Kent and Baltic Baron, the selection didn’t enjoy the clearest of passages that day and never appeared as happy on the undulations as he does at York.
In fact, the five-year-old’s two best career performances have been achieved at this afternoon’s venue this season courtesy of an emphatic victory in a course and distance handicap in May prior to a creditable third-place in the John Smith’s Cup when he again didn’t enjoy the clearest of runs late on.
Another positive today is the renewing of his association with Joe Fanning who steered Keith Dalgleish’s gelding to the cosy defeat of Firmament four starts ago and he appeals as a sporting bet in one of the most competitive races of the week.
With many firms offering enhanced place terms, Baltic Baron also appeals as a fair bet given he too found trouble in running at Goodwood.
Of course, an interrupted run is a standard occurrence on the downs, but with David O’Meara a trainer to be feared in York handicaps, his representative is worth playing too with a couple of his best speed figures handing him major claims.
The closing fillies’ handicap is another candidate for the tag of most competitive race of the week with another maximum field declared, however Salayel (York, 4.50) could prove a good bit better than her mark of 91 in time and should relish the prospect of decent ground and a strong pace.
Since joining Roger Varian, it has taken a while for the selection to drop her head and consent to settle, but recent signs have been more encouraging in her home work and she could boast too much class for her rivals in an open finale.
